  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Update Thread

I'm pretty confident those white models were a limited edition.

I think, as long as manufacturing allows, Red could really allow (for a small sum) people choose a body color or scheme for their Weapons.

Seems like a natural evolution of the "naming one's body" concept started by the community. Probably wouldn't come cheap to the one asking for it, since it would mean a personalized manufacturing or a different line from all the "mass produced" ones, but probably would have a significant group of takers. Specially for owner operators that don't plan to sell their gear.

Personally I like the adherence (with exceptions - white) to Henry Ford's sales pitch... "you can have any color you want as long as its black." That included Ford's Model T.

RED's model T... T. Rex Helium, should stay black as is expected of the species, IMO. '-)

You don't want the camera to be the center of attention when shooting, so by making it black RED is essentially saving camera owners who want to trick out their cams, from themselves..

I think top of the line special edition special color is good. Not everything, just those few models. One day Red is going to do 10k-16k (very soon I imagine vista Helium). It maybe a first common model in the industry to do this, and worth saying here I am. 16k (or that 28k wide sensor) will be so cool for still and billboard advertising use, even video billboards. Notice I say, so cool, and I virtually never say that because this is and most things are not.

i posted a question in the blackshading for dummies thread, but im afraid no one looks at it anymore, ive read through everything i possibly could but id love to post it here too to get a response from people with the new camera systems with an auto blackshade camera. being auto, i never thought id have to do anything but...

ive never had to blackshade a camera before, as i never owned one, ive read through everything, but so now with the new cameras, i have a raven and the first time i just updated the firmware it asked me to recalibrate the black shading.

so i went into maintenance, and there was a factory setting and a auto37c XXXXXX choice, but instead i hit create. it went through the procedure and now there is a new calibrations called auto38cXXXXXX.
then i just exited the menu. am i done, did i do the right thing?
please help!
thanks!

Jordan, check your messages. I sent you some useful info...

Funny, I asked a question on black shading, which appears to be just some new trendy name for pixel fixed noise calibration (seriously) but the post again appears to be deleted. At least it is now coming up in the first pages of Google.

Does anybody use this termonlogy outside of Red users?

These days it's called Sensor Calibration in the RED world as there's even more fun stuff going on. Other cameras have other names and methods (like Auto Black Balancing).

You'll see a message if the calibration was successful, if it was you are good to go. At any time you can go back to the Sensor Calibration menu under Maintenance and on the top left it will show which calibration is "applied". You can also load up and apply any calibration from your saved ones. Or eventually delete them once you run a few more of them as you'll need to clear out some space.

Typically if your weather is pretty stable outside, I mean within 15 degree range or so. You won't truly need to re-calibrate. I mainly do it when there's extreme weather, temperature, or humidity shifts. In LA for instance I don't find the need to re-calibrate when filming at night from day or anything like that. You can likely hold onto a calibration for a while. It is good to check it with ISO or FLUT with the body cap on to make sure it's a nice flat dark image.

Thanks. I tried to look it a bit before and got basically 0 or near 0 results. Pays companies to keep on topic and use a standard term, or proper description. This is something I'm well aware of, and even better results past fixed noise. I'm pretty sure I've proposed mapping over a number of heat/etc ranges before for much better results. They just stumped me as to which was the more likely usage they meant originally, but that post got stalk..I mean deleted anyway.

Anyway, it would be much better to use mapping based on ranges then single maps, where people have to load in different maps all the time as proposed in another thread. The stuff I'm working on can accomodate actual noise at least a little too. But that might be 1 or 2db. However, noise is best accommodated in the 3D domain as I proposed last decade or the decade before. Does Red do this yet prior compression Phil?

awesome, thanks phil and brandon!
so no need to highlight it and hit apply i guess, and should i always keep the factory one in there just in case?
what or why is that one there?

October update = Cinema Camera phone?

Is there any word yet from Red yet if the Red Rocket X will support the Helium sensor at some point in the future or are we looking at a new card again.

In the REDCINE-X PRO 42 Beta release notes there's this spicy tidbit:

Added: HELIUM 8K accelerated decoding with ROCKET-X + GPU (high-end GPU recommended).

Which makes me curious to how this is implemented. Like are they working in conjunction?

The short answer, is it looks like there is Helium support on the ROCKET-X.

Factory is factory and you'll notice it can't be deleted. It's a good reference to have in case you get in a crazy spot where you've encountered say a laser strike or something like that. It basically is the "control" as that's what the calibration looked like at the factory.

Sensor Calibration, all the things it does, and the calMap are applied before compression of course.

RED's tech is proprietary, so you won't be digging much deeper than that and getting too many answers.

The biggest change in the behavior of Sensor Calibration is the addition of Auto Calibration to DSMC2 bodies. This new "way" provides approximately a 10 stop range and doesn't require you to create individual passes for each shutterspeed. What happens is when you change the shutterspeed outside of the current range, in about 7-12 seconds the updated calibration is applied (which you can see on the on-screen overlay as the E will go from yellow to green typically) and you can shoot away.

This pretty much changes the game for practical shooting situations as people switch between shutterspeeds and frame rates. There is a temperature range that's calibrated as well. When you're out of range with your temperature and exposure your T/E meter will alert you appropriately.

Hi Jarred, i preorder my scarlet w and I am almost getting it, but I would like to know about The epic W, if The diference in price is not too Big I would go for The epic W with new sensor. I would be very sad if my scarlet W arrived and and a few weeks after a new epic W was anounced for 15k brain. And The upgrade path for The scarlet how is that going to work. I am investing in your camera and I would like to get The best I can aford for. Btw keep up The awesome work ;)

Heh heh no Epic-W will not be 15k for new customers... It's price point will be north of Epic Dragon. It's pretty awesome.

But.. if you are an existing RED camera owner.. you will have a great path to Epic-W.

Thanks for The reply Jarred, so would it be The 15k for The red epic Dragon for The update ? That would be great to buy a second hand epic right now and upgrade to W in 6-12 months ;)
