In my opinion, when you announce a camera, it must be available for purchase right away.

Then buy a Canon.

That's not what you get with Red. Or with Tesla. Or with any company doing anything truly ground-breaking.

If you want ground-breaking, put on your patience pants.

If you want Apple-style instant gratification, mass-market satisfaction, then buy a Canon, or a Sony or any number of other cinema cameras that are probably cheaper and have more impressive specs, but aren't doing what Red are doing.

And - I might add - aren't doing what Red are doing right here in the USA.

Just to understand : if you know that every new camera model is going to be a great success (and it deserves it, of course !), why not saying anything about it, manufacturing it in great quantities, and then announcing it, like Apple does ? This way, you would have more satisfied customers and no waiting game. Your first big batch would give you time to carry on making the others.

And yes, about Blackmagic, I don't even mention them ;-)

Thanks Tom, I've been following Red from the beginning, you know, not since December 2015 like you ;-)

Almost every phone that apple has announced has gone into backorder the day that sales began. That is why people line up around the block on the first day. They have the same problems.... it starts at 1-2 business days on the website, then slips to 3-4 days, then 2-3 weeks, etc. The Macbook 12" when it came out... almost 2 months backorder. The Trashcan Mac Pro.... 4 months backorder. And this is a company with likely 100x more employees dedicated to managing just inventory and just supply chain than we have total employees.

As Tom says.. same with Tesla. That lineup after they started shipping started at 6 months.

Ferrari.... backorder for a new 488 is 3 years.

Well, I must have been lucky then ;-)

Anyway, this didn't answer my question, but you obviously know your job better than me ;-)

Because taking pre-orders, and the cashflow from it, is part of Red's business model.

And because when you serve a niche audience, having visbility of your demand is really important. If Apple produces a couple hundred thousand units too many, NBD.

There's no need for snark. Maybe as well as patience pants, you need to put on your civility shirt.

Jarred,
Meanwhile to calm everyone, can you have Brent shoot a short on HELIUM of you doing doughnuts in your Tesla?!?!
Pretty please!! :)
You know you want to... :)

PS. Your communication very appreciated!

Tom for the win.

Kristin.. careful. You can attack me all you want but if you start being a douchebag to other users you will be silenced.

I for one like to know what's around the corner. Helps me stay focused and save up for when the time comes. So yeah keep doing that.

I see it as camera foreplay.

The anticipation is half of the fun!

I've said it before, maybe in this thread not sure. But if any REDUSERS here are close to the WNY area that need a camera while they wait for their S-W, shoot me a pm or an email. I will be home with the camera Aug 12th. dont have anything booked after that for now...

Frustrating to see so many people lashing out. We all want the same thing here guys/gals- To get the newest gen Red cams in our hot little hands. Some have them already, while most do not, but expressing your frustration directly towards others isn't what this community is about. We help one another, through good times and bad and ever time I've ever needed this forum, it's been there...providing assistance when I was in dire straits.

Use the forum...don't abuse it. Plus, good thngs are worth waiting for...especially when RED is creating those good things!

Good man.

I posted a similar offer for LA based folks who want a couple free days with my Scarlet-X. It was near the beginning of this thread, and I've only had one email about it.

There is a very well known fact in the creative industry: You can get a job done at a LOW COST, EXCELENT or FAST, but you can only pick two. Raven and Scarlet-W are just that: lower cost and excelent but the time you have to wait in order to get them is a lot. That's just how things work, everywhere. And yes, it applies to 8K VV because that is still a low-cost sensor if you compare it with the energy and complexity needed to make one.

Im Down to help. but ONLY if people are really on the waiting list for a SW. My epic is also around.. kinda funny, my SW was supposed to be my "B-Cam"

I've been shooting everything with my SW and the Epic has become the back up camera lately @@

Understand the frustration. The problem is... the reality is that simple statement is as honest of a statement as I can make.

Making our sensors is not like making anything else. It is very volatile and very unpredictable. You can't rush the process or even worse things happen. When you make sensors as complex as ours ( nobody else does ) it is not abnormal to get an entire lot of sensors that are just not good enough.. and no matter how much you guys all yell at me I'm not going to lower our insanely high QC standards just to get more cameras out the door. And yes that applies to Raven's just as much as it does Scarlet-Ws all the way up to 8K VV Weapons.

we are shipping cameras... but not near the amount fast enough to make everyone happy.

Our demand is simply way way way over our supply. Things are getting better... and we have the Helium sensor coming up in new ovens way faster than we thought and that takes some pressure off everything else and makes more room for dragon sensors in production.

But I said it before... it is just a waiting game.

Like others said.. We are not the only game in town. There is much competition and other companies are slashing prices dramatically on their cinema cameras for whatever reason. If waiting for us to get out of our shitty hole is beyond your patience, it might be a good time for you to consider jumping onto something else.

Waiting can be frusterating but I will NEVER jump ship hehe.

RED 4 LIFE!

Keep up the great work guys, I will wait as long as it takes :).

If you're on the waiting list and in the Seattle/Tacome area, ping me... I'll try to help -- just keep in mind that I don't own this particular Red camera, which makes me a bit more overprotective of it. :)

I'll give it some exercise this weekend though. And throw my new AC for a bit of a loop, since she just got introduced to my Cion a week and a half ago. :)
