  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

after spending 4 days on set with one of the busiest and most talented Dp's in hollywood i would have to say i disagree with jim. you guys know an awful lot and it is nothing but a joy being on set watching every one get excited about the images that are being generated.

comments like, "well thought out" and "love this camera" are coming from all of the Dp's and directors i have worked with over the last 5 months.

Thanks for your call for perspective. As I wait for my RED One shipment tracking numbers to hit my email in-box I recall how easy it has been, over the last few months, to become a fan-boy about this project and yet, as a professional, how I must also maintain a healthy skeptic's perspective of this one tool among hundreds that populate a set. There are so many things that can potentially excite me - my budding career, revolutionary new visions in commercials and features, off-the-shelf tools that allow filmmakers to create any image they can imagine in the comfort of their homes...

I constantly ride the fence between fan-boy and sober skeptic. I chose to buy in around the 400's after I saw some of the initial images coming off the early prototype - after RED had shown they had a potentially real device - a sober choice. I also chose the 400's so that most of the beta bugs would have been worked out by early adopters - a sober choice. I have painstakingly researched and chosen each and every accessory and tool to accompany my RED One to maximize my budget and capabilities - sober choices every one. I have avoided any hint of myopia in my thinking and participation in this forum.

But just this once...

I've never been a Red "fan boy" but for the first time, I have to say I sympathise with them.

I've had everyone coming at me from every direction expecting me to solve every problem they have. Owners wanting to have their camera treated like a glass ornament with DoPs wanting to run and gun. everyone on set trying to teach me how to get the preview out and on-board monitor working at the same time. We lose 1/2 an hour per shoot with people not believing me.

I'm so tired and I can't take a holiday because I'm needed on every shoot. I can only imagine how the RED team must feel.
 
Okay, a few days ago you told every to not let up, to keep on you. To keep hounding you WE WANT OUR CAMERAS NOW! Now you're saying to cut you some slack and relax?! Ha! :^D

I read ya. I'm sure I'll be a RED user someday when my production budget allows it, so as of now I don't have a horse in this race. But I watch what you guys are up to and I think you're rockin-an-rollin and doing great things in uncharted territory. So, yes, I'll give you all the slack you need (but that's easy for me to say!).

You mean to tell me that some "dude" who used to sell goggles and sunglasses to bikers and surfers out of the truck of his darn car is behind the RED effort? What the hell does he know about cinematography, cameras, lenses, the whole technically complex enchilada? Shite, we should get our deposit back right away. And that "army" he refers to, they must be a bunch of hippies just like him, I mean, like, what do they know about also? What?! RED is headquartered in California, not Japan, or even Korea or China? We are f..ed!

Jim, chillax my good man, you're doing well, and the beauty of it all is that, absolutely, you have no idea about what you're doing, which is why every step in the right direction is a milestone and a sweet success. Light yourself a nice cigar, let the naysayers light up the proverbial rocket under your bottom and take the compliments of the fanboys with a pinch of salt, and keep trying to impress the person you should impress the most: your old self. Rock on dude! And btw, have you thought about touring the states selling REDs out of the trunk of your car? That would, like, totally rock dude!

remember that for many of us this forum is one of the few places where one can speak out loud and be heard ... and it feels good to be heard.
really.
So i understand that it can feel frustrating to hear many complaints and so much dissection of the product in every flaw or imperfection, but you should just be proud of this.
Also, this complaining-listening process, although painful, will sure be one of the many factor that will make RED ONE completely awesome.
ok, some dissections and requests can be quite lame, but the final result will be worth the pain :sorcerer:

What I think is you need to re-evaluate your priority tree. So I'm going to help you here. On top of the priority tree is ME! Because I was a dumb ass and didn't jump when I should have leaped. I have to wait at the back of the line. I not happy about it, don't you people know who I think I am! What does a self absorbed, egomaniac has do to get some action around here, Jesus Christ!!!!!

Again so we are clear Jim, this is the new priority list. Adobeone's needs fallowed by all the other crap that you need, like food, water, and sleep. Don't make me come down there.....

I was filming with Daniel's 222. You dont have to convince me any more.
I'm waiting, praying, cheering, what ever it takes. The RED one is great and I know that it is even getting better. That's all I need to know.
Keep doing your thing guys. I know it is worth the wait.

Thats a scary statement for a purchaser who is committing a 1/2 million into a system that seems to get more complex to use as the days go on.

JIM, You have big balls, I give you that, but Just tell me one thing to relieve my finance departments stress. Are you guys going to be around for the long haul like Arri has been to all of us.

You have showed massive amounts of commitment so far in getting this beast up and running to this point. You and your teams should be commended for that no doubt, but please tell me that you are in it for the long haul to make RED the new arri of the 21st century.

Dude. take a breath, a big breath, your company has miles of support as you can see in this forum. Just do it right and don't trip up by running to fast.

The only thing you have done wrong (in my eyes) is released to early.

Keep kicking those goals and don't look back.

From someone else who took on Digital Aquisition.... well I just want to say I'm impressed. The deep dark secret is not everyone who's steering DAQ knows where its going. We just work our asses off to get there. The problems you're confronting are industry wide ones, and ones that have only really been tackled by a VERY small community. You're taking it to scale, and the issues that we face day in day out here in hollywood are now being presented to the populace at large. No it's not easy, but you still get that weird sick sense of glee when you're the first to do it ;-)
