The final shot of Tarkovsky's 'Nostalghia.' For my money the most beautiful shot in the entire history of cinema.

Of course, DVD screencaps don't do it justice at all, but here are frames near the start and the end of the shot. It's a very slow pullout which places the protagonist by his childhood home in Russia inside a ruined Italian cathedral. It almost seems like a still image, until the dog slowly starts moving, and then all of a sudden, snow begins to fall over the entire landscape.

Hey Jason,
I took a picture of the that cathedral in San Galgano this summer. Very impressive place ... a church without a roof ...!

Beautiful. Hope to be able to visit it at some point! Thanks for the photo.

Not a great movie overall, but very nostalgic for me. I love this shot:

It's great! Cause it's high-quality popcorn movie [with a message].

I was just about to post this [Dances With Wolves]:

... when I saw your still... [BTW, that shot from Robin Hood was done at 125 fps... Here I come, lil Scarlet ].

Spooky... everything is everything...

Bunches of rad, iconic shots already mentioned, but I'll throw out a few of my faves (I'm not at home with my DVDs, so apologies for the lack of screencaps):

1. Barton Fink finally got a mention! Yay! The hell/blazing corridor shots are unbelievable.
2. Nearly any shot from The Third Man. Krasker and Reed have such beautiful, intricately composed frames.
3. Lots of kudos for Kubrick, but I haven't seen any props here for Dr. Strangelove. Many to choose from, but I love Slim Pickens riding the nuke.
4. A few mentions of The Shining, but don't think anyone's listed the swish pan/axe swing shot as Nicholson breaks down the door. I love the violence of the motion in that shot. Terrifying.
5 & 6. I'll end with a duo of Hitchcock - the water beating down from the shower head after Janet Leigh has been stabbed in Psycho and, from Notorious, the high wide shot of the grand hallway reception that lands on a close shot of a key hidden in Ingrid Bergman's hand.

You fellas have given tons of food for thought. My next online stop is Netflix. Keep 'em coming!

Too many to list...

Too many to list...

...but this is one of my all-time favorites (from Barry Lyndon):

This is not the full frame (it's been cropped horizontally). And, of course, the colors are way off. Too harsh. But, you get the idea.

You see what you did? Now I'm going to have to see that film again...

Funny, much as I adore E.T., the most striking image is from the movie's poster. It's E.T.'s finger stretching out to Elliot's, mimicking that of God and Christ on the ceiling of the Sisteen Chapel. I met the marketing guy who created that image and he told me it was his favorite work in his career -- it just popped into his head when he saw the movie.

Yeah, the Christian references are evident, although SS denies to have intentionally made them. :turned:

I'd say there are also very strong references to The Little Prince.

And I think SS is :alien: himself.

P.S. Is there a smiling-alien emoticon. Cause this one looks a little too War Of The Worlds to me.

P.P.S. Ohh.. I forgot that Spielberg directed War Of The Worlds too. Nevermind...

By "shot" I assume we mean as long as the camera goes without cutting. Now everyone talked about the really long shots in "Children of Men" and while I was very impressed from a logistics standpoint (I very much did not envy the AD, who probably did 90% of the work for that) but the whole thing was not beautiful, I just felt like I was following some CNN reporter around. But there is one really long shot that I think is beautiful, and that's from Excalibur. It's near the end, when Percivel returns with the Grail. I never tire of rewatching that sequence. Below are 5 of the keyframes of that one beautiful take that seamlessly transitions with emotion and finesse.

The film Russian Arc is filmed in one take, its definately worth a watch
