  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The single best buy...

I know my clients suddenly take a keen interest in the camera when I mention it is the same camera that shot the Hobbit. This week I was in the middle of Australia at Mt Isa filming the roughest looking outback characters. They are usually nonchalant about this stuff. But you should see them jump to their feet when I play the footage back for them and say "Come see what you look like on a cinema camera". Nothing breaks the ice like the best camera in the world.

It is hard to believe what a RED ONE with an MX sensor can be purchased for. One can own the same camera that shot "The Social Network" and "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" for next to nothing.

Just sayin'.

Jim

Everytime I see a RED ONE package being sold for less than $10K (which is pretty much every package these days), I can't believe it. It felt like yesterday that people were happily paying $25K just for the body, and another $10K just in basic accessories. And if I resist the urge to block my memory, I remember when I spent $10K for an HVX200 with a Red Rock 35mm adapter. And believe me, that was no "Social Network" or "Girl with Dragon Tattoos".

Mark... I have always liked you. :-)

The RED ONE MX is just about all anyone would ever need to shoot a major feature. There still isn't another camera to beat it. Well... I guess EPIC is the exception. :-)

And then there is EPIC Dragon. Good thing these are all upgrades.

We have only made two cameras... who would have thought?

Jim

the Dragon is not out the cave yet, but it sounds like you guys are baking the better cake to my ear.

It's pretty insane. Nobody else has done anything close. And the MX sensor - WOW - all those Red Ones, Scarlets and Epics around the world making movies for YEARS on that same MX sensor.

When you ATTEMPT to put that in perspective - you start to understand how significant the Dragon sensor could be. Counting the seconds to rock the new beast hard!

Gotta question your maths here.
What about the Scarlet and the Epic Mono? :)

Freya

was going to ask the same. Wonder if Jim thinks Scarlet is a R1 in a match box, or if it's really an Epic in battleship grey.

I got a couple shots on the R1 I'd like to use one day to cut with Epic and Dragon footage, it's good to feel that's even an option. When 1080P came out, all my SD footage died.

I recently DPed a feature with Epic as A cam and R1 as B. They both cut nicely and the R1 performed flawlessly..

2005 roughly, to now. 8 years and only two camera's built? What about Sony and Canon, at least a half dozen or more each?

In 2005 I was saving for a Canon XL-2, then I heard about RED. Everything went on hold, I started saving and I'm still upgrading from that first camera body.

Sorry for the language but that's pretty FUCKING AWESOME....

I'm sure glad I didn't buy that XL-2. :)

We LOVE our RED One and just wish you guys could find some way with your magic to give us old RED Oneite some Dragon love inside that bullet-proof body.

We'll be shooting our third feature next year, and I have to say that I'm tempted to continue to shoot it on our RED One. I may be a fool, but I just love that camera!

It took a while to get those who I work with to get on board with what I was trying to tell them about RED,,, but they would not have it any other way now..
Thank you RED. I kind of miss my old R1 it got me to where I am now.

Hey Jim, will the 3rd camera be called RED GODZILLA? Just wondering...heheheheh

No offense but the Epic is such a huge improvement in usability over the RedOne. Smaller, lighter, SSD mags, ... Just sayin'

Cheers - #19

Yeah, you're right of course (sigh) but there's just something about the shape and feel of that old RailRoad tank car shaped camera (R-1) that I feel nostalgic for every now and then. '-)

especially on the old steady cam rig.... unforgettable

Yeah, and sometimes it's not even about the performance of the camera but the association between the time and place/footage shot, and the camera it was shot with.

:iagree:

I'm nearly done shooting a doc with it now and should be shooting a feature with it this fall.
R1 MX is still a very good camera. Would be pleased to see it's life extended with more advanced sensor tech.

I shot a couple features on the company's RED One MX last year and will probably have a couple more shot on it before this year is out. It's still an amazing piece of equipment (though maybe not quite as user friendly as the Epic) and an exceptional value.

Amazing for sure!!! Love this camera to death. The only Red cameras better are the Epic and Epic Dragon!
