  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Cool! November is earlier than I thought for #400.

Huge thanks in advance to Jim, Ted, Graeme, Jarred, Rob & the entire Red Team for all hard, intense work they will endure in upcoming weeks!

Now, things are getting exciting!!

two quick questions only curious here - no pressure - :

#1 do you have any updated estimates on avail of lenses ?

#2 any accessories that MIGHT not be ready before August 30th?

Also, Jim, big congrats on "all things Oakley". Just fantastic. You should be very, VERY proud.

If I recall, Jim said eary on that accessories were never a problem, therefore I think they all most likely stayed on the origional schedule.

Jay

OK. Here is the revised schedule. IT IS STILL TENTATIVE (as required by law).

Cameras for movie production- now to July 30th. These cameras will have limited features. Not enough for production cameras but enough to shoot a major motion picture.
Thank you for the update, Jim. I realize that this schedule is tentative (as all of the others have been), but having something that's even a ballpark estimation helps somewhat. At least we have a target now.

I'm still not understanding how a camera can "not have enough features to be a production camera" yet have enough to "shoot a major motion picture" (isn't that what many of us intend to do?), but I digress. I'm glad that there are some units out there being tested and I know you won't release the cameras to the public until they're 100% ready.

I know this schedule is about three to four months later than you originally declared you were hoping for, but the difference between RED and other (unnamed) camera companies is that at least when dates slip you have been in good contact with us to keep us up to date on what's going on. The only time I was perturbed was waiting five weeks for your update just to be told to "wait some more," but you came through this week and I know that this project has been anything but easy. The fact that all of us are still here with you speaks volumes, I think. I said it before, but I think it bears saying again: I'm critical because I care. I know you have a lot of followers here (some more crazed than others), :-P and I've been a prime supporter from day one. But because you're the first camera company in a long, long time that is not only making the product that so many of us have wished for but are actually taking the time to listen to customers and get input, I have always thought it important to call you out on the things that aren't working right alongside offering praise to the stuff that's fantastic. I hope the sterness of my conviction has not eroded away at any appreciation you have had of my character in the last several months. I want to see this camera and this company succeed in the best of ways, for I believe it will benefit all of us.

The last big question mark (for me - I know others have several more questions) is how the accessories are going to work, just what actually will be available to us (and when), and what the prices will be. Luckily, I'm in "batch #2" so hopefully those in the first batch will be just as concerned and you'll have the info ready by the time my camera is ready. I know RED ONE is the priority and top concern, but it's the usability that will really help to carry it. I'm also really interested in seeing how the GUI has evolved since NAB; with all of the delays in suppliers and such, I'm hoping that whoever is responsible for the interface has taken the time to really pimp it out! :-)

Good luck to you and everyone else on the Red team for the remainder of the run... you're in the home stretch now and I think it's pretty safe to say that we're all (way more than) excited about the months to come.

Thanks for the updated release schedule!

Hopefully things like owner's manuals and software will be release a bit early so we can get a jump on the workflow issues.

I am very interested in testing REDCINE as early as possible as I will not be using FCP for my post workflow.

Thanks jim for this and we look forward to shooting red in 2008...

my hope is that this extra time will help to bring down the price on the solid state options....I had several projects scheduled, but that is the way it goes!

Any clarification on the board and whether or not the problem has been resolved?

So does this mean if we were to order one today or later we'd be getting it after May?

This is what I'm so confused about, because I thought Jim said that 2000 cameras had been sold, but maybe I misunderstood. Maybe that was 1,500 + 2,000, and now that number is higher? Or maybe Jim is saying that there will be more orders and that by May 4,000 cameras will be *available* to ship, who knows, really. We don't know the exact number of REDs that have been ordered or reserved by this point.

Also I'd like to know about the lenses, like if I were to order a prime set now, could I get it earlier than my camera, or the same time as the camera, or later? This is all information I need to know sooner or later.

Agreed, I'm trying to plan some major financial deals and was hoping to purchase not too far from now, but I'd certainly need it before June of 2008.

Lenses, etc, too.

wow, must of been a bit of a cluster fuck if the board redesign and the feature updates moved south by 4 months.

Nice to know that sooooo many bugs/problem have come out (well hopefully).

I never really worry how many bugs come out in the testing phase...actually I quite like it cos it means they're not going out into production units. The report I really look at is how fast those bugs are fixed!

Cheers,

Hey guys, I think he is planning out the first 4100 units (units already sold plus ones still yet to be sold) shipping plans not giving the schedule for units that HAVE BEEN sold. May sound crazy but I say this because Jim did just state in another post a few days ago that approx. 2000 units had been sold. Another reason I say this is because I e-mailed the red team directly about 2 weeks and a few days ago and asked if I had ordered a Red one as of that date what the delivery would be and they answered back with "probably early 2008". So either way, either they got another 2000 orders in the last 2+ weeks or there was some major decisions made to slow production at the last minute so the cameras are made with quality. In the end, I'll still wait it out.

We have only about 2000 reservations and orders. I gave the schedule out several numbers so everyone could get a feel for production. We expect that orders will continue to come in, especially after we begin shipping. Sorry for any confusion.

Jim

Yes! That's "talking" to a billionaire twice in 1 day!!! Jim you're a badass! Thanks for straightening that one out.

I'm glad to see a more realistic schedule. I also hope everyone is ready for another few months of delay in case @#$@ happens... I'd recommend all reservation holders to add a few months to any production schedule to be safe or you well be spending lots of $$$ renting or buying something else.

Besides GREAT WORK JIM AND COMPANY, my simple question is the accessories and reservations. I would assume a low number without an early reservation, would get accessories before a 6 month later higher number reservation?

Is that correct? Assuming of course, that you can replace and supply the later high end reservation holder with newer accessories. How could you ship a camera without batteries (holding 100 for reservation holders 6 months out)?

I'd assume you are going to match camera delivery with accessories as best as possible. I've been waiting on reserving accessories for several reasons. 1 - things keep changing so fast so why reserve? 2 - why put down more reservation money for things not yet locked in? 3 - I hope to see some stuff tested like lenses, etc - to see what the reviews are and then make my decisions as to NIKON and red lenses, etc. 4 - it makes more sense to ship accessories more on first camera delivered than on reservations, assuming proper production numbers and supply are avialable.

If this is not the case, then please send us a formal e-mail asking all reservation holders to check what they want and to send you a list with deposit. Until, I see a formal request, I assume many reservation holders are NOT reading these boards 2hrs every day to find out what we are suppose to do. Best Regards.

Excellent! That is awesome news. Phew... so I think I'd get mine in January or February. I ordered two months ago. I'm guessing February, but that's fine, that'd be awesome if that happens! About what I expected, actually. So I'm stoked. Thank you, Jim!

We have our hands full getting this project off the ground. Our intent is to make personal contact with each reservation holder before we put their order together to package as many accessories they want as possible.

Jim,

What are our chances of getting some "tactile knowledge" of the accessories before we buy them. In other words, how can we try building the camera and setting up different accessories.

I'm willing to take a leap of faith on the body, I think that's a known quantity. But for the rest it's like I'm buying a car and I can't sit in it even in the showroom. Lenses in particular are really important to me, especially in terms of mechanical performance. While the RED primes are much less expensive than their alternatives, they are still an investment that needs to be thoroughly researched.

In any case, congratulation on another hurdle.
