Jim, do you have a dog? You should take your sweet camera and your dog for a walk someplace beautiful. It's the best way I know to alter my mood and gain a little perspective.

I'll lend you my dog. She's an outstanding trail dog. She'll hang on your every word and treat you like a king, without any judgment, for a little while. It's quite refreshing. Does wonders for this whole self-doubt thing.

There is no precedent for this type of interaction. There is no filter, no strategy. We are just winging it. How about that...
Jim

Innovation in all arenas - technical, business processes, customer interaction... its the only way to leapfrog and break new ground! I'm not a customer yet, but will be soon as your schedule allows, and in the meantime, following this ride as its totally exciting, educational and insightful. Thanks!

I am feeling quite insecure tonight. I started Oakley with $300. Then RED. And no one wants to hear how both happened. What's up with that? :-)

Oh, well... back to work.

Jim

Ha ha ha, thats soooooo funny! Check this out Jim, Are you sure no one wants to hear? You must be from Jupiter. This is the planet earth. All we ever want to know is how our fellow men or women who have big dreams and aspirations set out to accomplish them. Ask any Reduser on this forum the type of conversations we have when explaining the Red camera revolution to our non filmmaking wives, friends, family etc etc,. We get passionate and excited, we tell these embellished stories about you (since we don't really know your real story) filled with defiance, digital revolution, the impending death of film, the lame competition, etc.
YES we really want to hear your story. One day there will be a film about the guy who killed film. I will be alive to say, "I know that dude" he used to run his mouth on Reduser.net and at trade shows. I was one of the silly ones that believed him. funny thing is he changed my life forever. I am able to live my filmmaking dream thanks to this Man"
What you don't know is all over Africa film studios have sprung up thanks to the affordability of owning Red cameras. For us the Golden age of cinema has just began. I know there are hundreds of other third world countries that can say the same thing.
When you speak of 4k and some folks say 2k is enough, they don't realize that the picture quality worldwide audiences have come to expect from American films is the same picture quality they expect from their own national filmmakers. In the last three years since the release of the Red cameras Third World Films have gone from almost no budget or Low budget, to getting product placement from brands, grants from banks and corporations, and private investors actually putting large sums of money into filmmaking. Everybody likes and wants to be associated with good quality productions hence the funding. There many new film theaters being built for digital screening and a crude but flourishing DVD distribution network.

So your story begins: Out of an investment of $300, Jim J set out to make his mark on this planet first by....................

sorry abt the rant, I got excited there.

Jim-I know you can't give us EPIC delivery dates, but...

Jim-I know you can't give us EPIC delivery dates, but...

Jim-
I understand you can't yet give us EPIC delivery dates, and I greatly appreciate the info you do share along the way, but is there any chance you could at least tell us a "WILL BE RELEASED NO EARLIER THAN" date? Yes, I know that this might not be ideal info to release, but this info would at least help financial strategizing and cash flow planning for the coming year.
Thanks so much for all the hard work,
-CK

I would pay for a "how to business/motivational CD/mp3" set (that's in quotes because your's would most likely be far more true/valuable than the ones on the market). Better yet, make the next RED day in Vegas a day longer and have speakers on the business topic use that day. You, and the ones you respect.

Jim this is the ONLY reason I've been on this forum for 3 years.
Jim, if you wake up in this sharing mood please share your story- tell us what it takes.
Without your story this forum is incomplete.
BTW I can't believe that you guys have so totally missed on this opportunity:mad2:

The 1st weekend gross: $2500. :-)

Jim

I guess it would be at least $17.500 ;)

As this is a new kind of business and marketing model, the first one to do it, is always the first who'll also get the beating. But remember you also created tons of fans, supporters and believers for a company with only ONE (major) PRODUCT in the lineup. That is a first you HAVE to be proud of, too. Not many businesses can say that ;)

Everyone with a little bit of sense knows that EPIC and SCARLET are real, running and just an inch away from our hands. (almost there.... aaaaalllmooost...) I just wish I could have afford the ONE.

I would love to hear the whole story, because it's not only a story about the American Dream but also of making your inner dreams come true. To believe in yourself and actually do what you dream of and make it happen TWICE, well if that's not success, what is?

You showed us how there is a difference between whining about not having the things and possibilities you want and dream of, and just creating them.

If you do not like what you have to live with, change it, but do not whine about not having it.

If there's your memoires coming up, I'm first in the line for a signed copy.
Be proud, you have more than the right to be.

As the french would say: chapeau!

And keep your infos coming. They are always fascinating to read. I would love to get a sneek peek behind the curtains. (always envy the ones that do)

With deepest respect

Patrick

I am feeling quite insecure tonight.

Jim -

A little over two years ago my now-fiancée returned from California having spent some time there working with a production company. She asked me to look into cameras for her, so she could get something started here. At the time, I hadn't the slightest intrest in any of this production business, but when I started to look, I found RED and I found these forums.

I loved the fact that the people here were deeply passionate about filmmaking and openly shared knowledge with each other. I loved that fact that the whole idea for RED was like some strange sort of pipe-dream: build the best camera possible and then get it into as many hands as possible. And I loved that fact that the guy behind it all was in the melee with everyone else. There was no artificial distance, no typical PR messages. Just people of every caliber and status in the industry talking about what they love and figuring out, together, how to do it better.

At the time, I was set on a path to get my PhD in Psychology and go on to do research and teach. Shortly after all of this, and some talking with my fiancée, I decided I would much rather be behind the camera. Now I do what I love.

So, while there may be times that you step back and look at some things with regret, be aware that what you are doing has changed my life for the better. I know I'm happier now than I would have been otherwise. And I'm sure there are a lot of stories here that are similar to mine.

After watching TSN again... it reminded me of the time I had one of those "give back" moments and volunteered to speak to the students at Harvard, Yale, Stanford, UCLA and my old almost Alma Mater... USC. I never heard back from any of them. Since they are the premier institutions in the land, you guys shouldn't pay much attention to what I say. They didn't seem to care much... I guess they teach "real" marketing and business principles. :-)

Jim

Jim, you're in America. You're not a real businessman unless you can leverage air 150 times and then sell the debt for a profit, then laugh as the country's economy falls apart but your cash is in the caymans. Their students would listen to that...

I would venture that not one of those school teachers have ever accomplished in their lives what you have done, so why the comparison ? Considering what you have already accomplished with just your camera company, your business practices should be a model for their classrooms.

You're one of the premier examples of entrepreneurial capitalism in America. So when is the Epic FF35 coming out, lol ?
