  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

the Oscars.... yeah....................

I only watched the trailer for PI but the animals still look stupid. They are getting closer each time but it's not there yet, IMO.

The best in the business accomplished those shots. R&H is the go to house for CG creatures. The same VFX Supervisor who brought you Narnia and Golden Compass as well as numerous others. A very difficult time for the studio at this very moment.

I though it would get Best Director, Picture or Screenplay.... they still did a great job.

Silver lining playbook was one hell of a script and it should have won best picture but...romantic comedies never do. So be it...congrats to all filmmakers. ;)

I think if you had seen the film you would think differently. The trailer alone is not in context. Half the time people look stupid in trailers. The line between life action and CG was so blurred in this film.

This. The only film that I cared about. I really, really don't understand the fascination with Argo. It was underwhelming to put it mildly.

With all do respect... I dont think it was understood. He thanked the people that made the bath tub, he even took the time out to thank his lawyer... his agent... He could single out his Canadian crew, the Indian crew... Taiwan... However, the digital actors had almost as much screen time as the main actor he thanked did. There is a real problem in the visual fx community and when it gets overlooked without a thank you... That only adds to the problem at hand.

Fair enough, I stand corrected. If you think about it, it's not that different than actors never thanking their DP's or editors for making them look good. VFX falls into that same category of overlooked artists (except they get paid a lot less).

Editor's are probably an excellent example of "saving" a movie and no one knowing.

Mike Seymour at FXPHD gave what I thought was a great lecture on this recently (background fundamentals 227 class 6) on the finance side. If someone is setting up a post/vfx house, I'd really recommend watching Mike's video (and talking with him, he's a very accessible person). I would add to Mike's comments that moving to operating expense (vs depreciated capital expense) with cloud processing as a way to go in the future (maybe a 70% opex & 30% capex as a goal).

I think in general, the transition to the nerds being the real cinematographers isn't taken well by the industry. [i would even venture that the "nerd" directors are really the main person behind the feel and look of the movie, not the director of photography. As I think about it, do people that shoot with digital thank RED during the awards(even if they used arri they were actually dependent on red's work). I think this general problem on who is responsible for the look and actual acting will get a lot bigger problem as performance capture becomes more prevalent.

Well said.

Yeah, I'll have to see the full version.

TRANSITION? Nerds have always been in the industry, remember the guys making the first STAR WARS?

Good example, on Star Wars 1977, George himself did not win any Oscars (sound got one, etc, but not George). I do think that was the first bunch of the nerds, while Cameron & Peter Jackson are the current main nerds (i'd put Ridley Scott as a Kubrik type sfx/set nerd ;)

Ang in the house...!!!!
