Although I don't spend my life on this board I remember a post from the RED team that clearly suggested there would not be an unannounced cut-off date to be eligible for an Epic-X body.

There are many working professionals, like myself, who have been following developments and saving thier money to purchase a camera.

I believe this move has, in some cases, benefitted those to whom $18,000 is a drop in the bucket, and has now excluded many who needed to be careful and deliberate in their equipment purchases.

I have spent almost 20 years in the film business, and I know several RED owners who are exceptional professionals and hard working people.

However, there are many trustifarian rich kids who will now benefit from stages 1-3, simply because they had the money to hold a place in line.

My understanding was that this company positions itself to be non-elitest. Yes, this stage system rewards the deserving and the loyal, but it also benefits those who can just throw their money around.

I would like to hear other opinions on this matter.

There is still a very good argument to rent whatever camera you need for the job in hand.

So what? It's been over two years since RED announced it's first product. If you don't have the capital and aren't willing to lease/finance than it is what it is. What do you care if someone who has the money buys it or not regardless of their status or years in the business.
I didn't want to spend all that cash and saved for a year but found financing to be the best option for me and it all worked out. Ultimately, you can't expect anyone or anything to make their business decisions around your inability to make decisions and make it happen. I'm really not trying to be a jerk here, it's just that if you see an investment whatever it may be and see an opportunity to make money or further your carreer or whatever you can't sit around and hope that it will fall in your lap. You have to strike when you see the chance. If you determine it's outside your means or can't justify the investment than you don't do it but don't rag on the ones that can. People buy these cameras for many different reasons and i personally think the only one you should be frustrated with is yourself at this point.
Nothing personal.

really guys?

You have to make a cut off point at some point.

and they did.

I remember Jarred and Jim both saying a few months ago

" your really going to wish you had a RED ONE" (not exact quotes.. but something really similar)

For someone not trying, you are doing a pretty good job.

My decision was not based merely on my ability to do so. I could have purchased a RED one body last week.

My hesitation was based on a RED team comment that October 30th would not be an Epic-X cut-off. The follow up comment made was "That would not be fair". I am confident that many of you know what I am talking about, and I am not the only one on this board pointing that out. That statement was posted on more than one occasion.

maybe it is a matter of communication / misunderstanding connected to the medium of communication, but i always had the impression that there would be a cut-off after / around october 30th - and i told several dp's in the last couple of weeks that they should order a red one before friday ...

kind regards,
martin

Hi Martin,

The 'Hint' thread was clear enough IMHO.

I think you guys missed something here...

"Anyone who buys a new RED ONE or a used RED ONE and transfers ownership after yesterday... will be able to trade it in for $17,500 credit on an EPIC-X Brain ONLY (STAGE Four).

The purpose of STAGEs ONE-THREE was to reward people who believed in the program and fought through the process with us. Buying today does not qualify for the same level of reward.

Jim "

Purchasing a Red One now means you're still eligible for the Epic Trade in Stage 4. Only Stages 1-3 were cutoff on the 29th.

Reasonable

Reasonable

I hear you all, but a few points folks -

1. Red has to make money. I see thousands of posts about trade in allowances, how great RED is, but very few that ask - hey, is RED making money? They gotta make money to give us this stuff. The stage program clearly attempts to strike a balance between "taking care of us" and "making money". Fine. We NEED them to make bucks, badly! I want support in 10 years as well as good tools.

2. Jim and team have taken huge risks with this unprecedented forum and strategy of "thinking out loud" and working alongside the customer. Its new territory. As worlds, businesses, markets and customers change, how can everything RED ever types here be taken as the word of god? Let's give them some credit, and let's avoid encouraging them to run back into the bunker and stop talking.

Just sayin, to use all your phrase...

I think Red One sales would stop if that was not an option, it's Brain only, quite a difference IMO.

LOL, understood, my previous post was a little harsh but you asked for thoughts, so. I guess what didn't make a whole lot of sense was you attacking anyone with a little money that may not be as talented as yourself or be in the business as long and accusing RED of rewarding them more than you, a non camera owner for investing in their product? How does that make business sense? My question would be, why would you expect anything if you aren't a current customer? Just because you say your saving for it or have the money, whatever, doesn't mean you should get any benefits that the rest of the owners have just cause you have more experience in the industry. Or did I miss the point of that part of your post too?

Yes ... You missed the point if the post.

It has to do with company integrity.

When you say something, you keep to it, or explain why you did not.

I don't need a reguritation of the RED credio. I know it already. Price changes and delivery date postponments are completely understandable when one is breaking new ground with new products. However misinformation is not.

My frustration with rich kids sitting on these cameras is that one should not have to make speculative decisions about buying equipment. Owning a camera should not be based on having money to hedge.

If you read the reaction to this announcement you will see this disappointment and complaint from many others as well. Do you suppose they were imaginig those misleading comments as well?

Would someone from RED like to address why statements regarding the cut-off were conflicting?

Stage 4 isn't an trade-in, it's buying the Epic for full price. Stage 4 is essentially waiting until the Epic comes out and just buying it.

I repeat....

Anyone who buys a new RED ONE or a used RED ONE and transfers ownership after yesterday... will be able to trade it in for $17,500 credit on an EPIC-X Brain ONLY (STAGE Four).

Easy stuff to understand here.

The 4 stage approach seems fair to me after the major contributions early adopters have made to the development program.
Show me any other company that would even give a full credit trade in for a new camera period.
