Wednesday will be exactly one year since Red obtains a U. S. Patent for the Red Camera it’s the “R3D File” “REDCODE RAW” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/REDCODE ) it’s what is all-about, that’s the SECRET behind their success, and they in fact invented a new way of capturing “Images on a Sensor”. The patent was given to Red.Com, Inventors “James Jannard” of Las Vegas, Nevada and “Thomas Graeme Nattress” of Ontario, Canada.
On that date a new “Chapter” in the evolution of “Motion Pictures” had emerged. What is curious is that Sony and Arri were not anywhere to be found during the years leading up to this event. Once the Patent was issued, without any objection it became ingrained in “Motion Pictures” forever! They are NOT very likely to license anyone else to use-it that means that the “OLD FILES” are NOT “OBSOLETE” they can be updated as the “TECHNOLOGY” advance, IN ANY RESOLUTION! The process will be forever protected. It’s like the other guys didn’t get the MEMO (on time). Now they are trying to catch-up, but they are a “Day Late” and a “Dollar Short”.
And now Canon has entered the storm, with their “Canon C300” (in January 2012) and news of their forthcoming “EOS-Series Digital SLR 4K Camera” (not sure when, it could be a long time). Meanwhile there will be the announcement and subsequent delivery of “Red Dragon”. Apparently, is not that easy to surpass the 2K Raw barrier, it’s hard without jumping over the “Sensor Size”, because of “Existence Cinema Lenses Size”, and “Cost”. The real story is RED's REDCODE RAW a format that continues to get better with each improvement to “Red Raw”.
Jim Jannard recently said; “Apparently we have finally got the attention of ‘the big guys’ in the industry”. The Problem is there is no competition they don’t have “R3D Files”, Red is protected by a U. S. Patent! The competition would have to invent new way of capturing images, or make what they have worked better, meanwhile Red move-on.
We can look forward to many more events like the one on November 3, 2011, but one thing will always remain constant; R3D files are “Red-Only”! So stay in the “R3D RAW Files” as long as possible, right up to end would be advisable. Remember you are recoding “Meta Data” on-to an “SSD”, watch you’re exposures and you will always be able to salvage your old footage and improve-it as advances are made, literally forever! What change is the monitoring of the picture, how you see it, by just adjusting the monitor, but the RAW Files do-not change.
Graeme is working on the math (continually) along with the rest of the Red team, like Deanan, and many more people at Red. The original footage of the “Old R3D Raw Files” are constantly being improved, so if you want to re-released your old footage you can actually update any changes to the “R3D Files” if you choose to do so, at anytime during the process; “Past, Present, and Future! “R3D Files” are a good choice at “Any Price”; from “Anywhere” the “R3D Files” are a category unto THEMSELFS! They are uniquely RED!
Take a film like “Lawrence of Arabia” (1962) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_of_Arabia_(film) ); it was shot on 65mm (very few are this way); they are one of the few that can currently compete with the current “R3D Files”, but not for long! You will still need someone like David Lean , Directing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Lean ), Freddie Young, Behind the Camera (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freddie_Young ), and Robert Bold (on the Typewrite, there were no computers at that time) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Bolt ) and Michael Wilson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Wilson_(writer) ). Looking toward the future; both the “David Lean Film” and “R3D Files” have something in common, they are always subjects to improvements’ that can be applied to the “Image”! In the case of “Lawrence of Arabia” transfer to a better resolution format (let’s say from 2K to 4K or even 6K or 9K) or printed to IMAX, and in the case of Red, just simply a newer Build and a newer “Camera Sensor”; “Red Dragon”!
In my opinion, it was never about the Camera, it was all about the “Image” so “Fuji and Kodak” had the field wide open, but then on “November 9, 2010” a Patent was issued to Red.Com, and the “Motion Pictured” industry took “One giant step” the game was changed forever. Tomorrow will the first anniversary of that Day! Fuji and Kodak had “Dynamic Range” and “Resolution”, that’s now changing. In a short while we’ll have the; “Red Dragon”. So 2k, 35 mm Film, 4k, 5K will not be “not good enough”, but with Red we can go forward to “Bigger and Brighter” things, one day we’ll reach 28K and beyond, meanwhile Red is leading the pack with all the others trailing behind.
Lee Iacocca (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_Iacocca ) use to say; “Lead, follow, or get out of the way”, and Jim Jannard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Jannard ) recently said; “The future is dependent on those that push... not those that react”!
I also think that “RedUser.net/Forum” was a rally great Idea, it allows Red to communicate directly with its users and anyone else that is “Looking and Listening”. It’s like an on-going dialogue. But is also the entire Red Team that is listening to what the members of “Reduser.net” have to say and implementing any “Good Idea”.
So, I raise my glass to Jim and Graeme for their invention, and the rest of the entire Red Team! “R3D Files” were a stroke of “Genius”! The company is-not Public, that a big thing too! They can follow their “Dream” without having to worry about a “Board of Directors” and “Immediate Profits”!
