  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The New Mac Pro is Here!!!

maybe this is worth a short wait?
An as-yet-unannounced top-end AMD Radeon W5700X Graphics Card with 16GB GDDR6 memory has leaked online in the Apple Mac Pro Desktop listing. The high-end graphics card appears to be specifically optimized for ultra-high-definition multimedia creators and editing professionals as well as workstations that operate in the finance and software development fields. Incidentally, the AMD Radeon Pro W5700X could be developed specifically for the Apple Mac Pro Desktops.

Yep, Navi

Although AMD has yet to officially acknowledge the existence of the AMD Radeon W5700X Graphics Card with 16GB GDDR6 memory, the naming scheme clearly indicates it is the mightier version of the AMD Radeon Pro W5700. The W5700 Card is based on the same 7nm Navi-based silicon but is optimized for quite varied workload

Not an Onion article:

Apple's Pro Display XDR With Nano-Texture Can Only Be Cleaned With Special Apple-Provided Cloth

Apple warns that Pro Display XDR owners should never use any other cloths to clean the glass, and if the included dry polishing cloth is lost, Apple Support should be contacted so another cloth can be ordered. There's no word yet on what Apple is charging for replacement cleaning cloths.

That is pretty slow for the money.

Which is just another way of saying "proprietary." One tends to result from the other, and which is the cause should be pretty easy to deduce ;)

Everyone should look at this video - best I've seen on configuring the system for editing... 28 core is overkill:

You can get a good system for editing at less than $13k if you order the memory from Amazon.

So, anyone out there with real world experience on this machine editing 8k RED footage with Premiere Pro? How about After Effects performance? Curious about peoples configurations and their thoughts.

We ordered a few 12-Cores and hoping to have them in by Feb.
For my config I went with the RADEON VEGA II as well as the Promise 8TB Enclosure.
RAM Im picking up third-party.
Apple tax a bit much for my taste.

I have the 16cores / 96gb / Vega II

AE rendering is a little faster than my 10Cores iMac Pro (rendering an older project I had iMac Pro: 6min 9sec and MacPro: 5min 55sec) AE is not multi core optimized. You won't gain much from using a Mac Pro with AE. Adobe is lagging.

Here are quick tests using Dragon 6K footage in PP and REsolve:

Premiere is stuttering badly at "full" playback using 6K 5:1 footage. It Plays like butter at 1/2. This is using Metal.

Resolve plays 6K 5:1 full debayer at 21fps in a 4K timeline. "Half res Good" Debayer plays RT in 4K timeline. 6K 5:1 full debayer in a 2K timeline plays RT. This is using Metal.

Can't wait to see the new Red SDK implemented in Resolve. I'm hoping for a good boost.

It's in the latest version, and on my machine it made a huge difference. I was able to jump from de-Bayering to 1/8 (from 8K) in a 2K timeline to deBayering to 1/2 Good in a 4K timeline on my octacore laptop with a 2060 GPU.

I meant the new METAL GPU accelerated R3D support.

Ah the benefits of having a well-supported GPU. Apple's newest Mac Pro has locked in 2nd-best CPU, 2nd-best GPU, and 2nd-best PCI infrastructure compared with AMD CPU, nVidia GPU, and PCIe 4.0. Looks like it will be 6-12 months before SW catches up to support on Windows today. Will AMD GPU surpass nVidia by then? Will Intel be out of it's funk by then?

Right now biggest feature of 2019 Mac Pro seems to be 6k display. That's a pretty thin thread by which to try to climb to #1.

Depends on the software... a lot of the professional stuff is already able to take advantage of 64 cores in Windows.

Will AMD GPU surpass nVidia by then?

Possibly, but very unlikely given that nVidia is going to go from its current 12nm process to a 7nm EUV that will put it in parity with AMD's process...

Will Intel be out of it's funk by then?

Yes, but that doesn't that it will be back on top of the CPU game. I suspect that Core-X will compete extremely well with Zen2... right around when Zen3 starts shipping. :)

The system I got is as follows:

16c 3.2ghz
96gb ram
Single Vega II Duo, 32gb x 2
1TB SSD

Additionally I have the sonnet m.2 x 4 card on the way. with intel m.2 sdds.
Also the Blackmagic 4k Mini Thunderbolt box.

Still in earl testing, but safari is pretty snappy!

Oh...and this is huge. The thing is dead silent. I thought it was broken when I hit the power button the first time!

Would be interesting to see how much improvement you get with the extra GPU in Resolve. I posted a couple tests above.
