  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Movi from Freefly

How old do you think I am? Dude got really nervous for some reason when I started wiggling it around.you can operate with 1 person. Majestic mode that has been mentioned. But with 2 people, the second can control camera movement within the gimbal. ...or pull focus, if you throw a remote FF into the mix.

Jeff, based on your seemingly infinite knowledge about all things digital, I assumed you were there with Jobs in the garage and, thus, well into your 50's. Looking at the picture... maybe 30. :-)

Careful with that word "game changer"....

Cinema is way more than just a collection of cool shots.

So I don't really think the game has changed.
And if anyone can now effortlesly now do cool shots.
Then what present value they have now....will be much less in the future.

If you could make Gold w/ an alchemy kit in your garage.
The value of Gold would be much less.

Then again, well thought out, motivated moves will always be valuable because they convey emotion; they have a distinct purpose. I am sure this device, like the Steadicam, will inspire plenty of moves that are essentially pointless, but that's the fault of the director, not the device. It seems as if it will reduce the time and cost of many shots that are now done with dollies, sliders, stabilizers, jibs, etc. Seems cool - albeit pricey.

Given the weight, it would be interesting if they developed some sort of vest/arm device to hold the weight for longer use.

I like the way Majestic mode is tuned... introducing dampening/lag or making it faster to keep up with the actual speed of the move.

A tempting system.

I'm just shy of 40. But my first computer was an Apple ][ and I took that thing apart and reassembled it more times than I can can remember. Not sure if my parents approved at the time, but I think they're ok with it now. Haha

as for Movi, I think it shows a lot of potential, show model wasn't quite ready for prime-time, IMO. It's rather light, but not something one would want to hand-hold with the dual grip config for any lengthy period. Depends entirely on your rig and how you try to use it. The unit I held in the video didn't have power for the camera, so I was trying to gauge how steady it floated the camera. Got a better look at it yesterday.it does very well, operator still needs to control up and down motion and keep that to a minimum. Majestic mode works as long as you operate within its abilities, it doesn't move the camera very fast... Hopefully it improves. It felt like it couldn't keep up with some relatively typical pans...

Guys at the booth were not very friendly when you try to really test the rig. But I think a big part of that had to do with the huge mob of people trying to get their mitts on it.

Pulled the trigger on the pre-order. Really looking forward to mounting this thing on one of our helicams. This is the final piece of the puzzle for great, low-altitude, cinema quality aerials by RC. I think you can stick a fork in the $75K Cineron at this point. It's done.

I saw in a separate demo that showed how the amount of dampening on the pan/tilt functions for majestic mode was adjustable via an ipad/laptop connected by bluetooth. They cranked the dampening down all the way and it actually did pans and tilts relatively quickly depending on your movement. Certainly wish I could've checked it out in person though, especially considering I just dropped down my money for one! haha

Yes, you can see the tuning of the Majestic and Shaky modes in the first Engadget video here http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/09/freefly-movi-gimbal-hands-on/ There's a blutooth connection that works with tablets as well apparently.

Once this software matures I can see some really interesting shots being designed. Obviously motion control moves from sticks is possible (there's already a record mode apparently).

They could not reproduce that on the show floor on monday or tuesday.. But it was talked about.

LAME. Well, they have the whole rest of Q2 to work out the kinks. Hopefully it's a little more polished than what you experienced when it comes to my doorstep.

Very tempted... (with the H/H version) but need to sell my business partners on the idea... not sure if this and a Dragon Epic upgrade is going to be an easy sell.

But, the more i see, the more I think it'll work. Initially I was a bit of a skeptic (didn't like the framing in the demo movie)... but it looks like this could be something really cool.

What I'd like to know is if Majestic (one man operation) can do pan and tilt (for example) simultaneously, or if this mode is locked off into having only one function (ie pan or tilt)?

Any insights?

I hope so too!

It shows promise, that's for sure. Another observation I have is that Freefly is getting all the exposure due to Vincent's promotion and social media infection. They're not the only guys out there with gyro gimbals this year. I think the Movi is the best one shown at NAB in terms of size and capacity for the needs of us on these forums. There were a couple smaller ones floating about and I saw two different guys walking around with self-built jobs holding small cameras. One guy came by the RED booth yesterday with one. It was made out of RedRock Micro handgrips and other pieces with a couple off the shelf gyros. It was small, he just had a little pocket camera in the rig, but it worked as good as the Movi.

I think in another year or two, gyro rigs like the Movi will be everywhere, just as octocopters are now. Everyone sells an octocopter it seems...

Couldn't agree more.
