  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Meizler Module... The Details.

So if the proxy component is dead, what does the Meizler consist of now? Wireless video transmitter? FIZ motor control/receiver? Ipad control?

Well ... since the FIZ has been released, I doubt there will be an actual "Meizler" now. Seems like the path is now individual components. Jarred mentioned in another thread that wireless video is next up - not really sure what they are going to do there since there are now so many inexpensive options that work great now?

The other thing that Meizler had going for it was wireless Timecode. Now there are a couple solutions you can buy to do this now - TimeCode Buddy, Horita, etc. with another leading manufacturer getting ready to release a complete system at NAB - but ... I was very impressed with how RED was integrating it in the Meizler .... so ... I'm still very interested in this aspect.

Ipad / wifi camera control is the thing I want badly. And it is even more relevant as many folks will move to native raw editing. I've said it a hundred times - the power to quickly and easily make basic color adjustments directly to the R3D files about to be recorded and instantly see the result out the camera's monitor path is a really big deal - and keep that non-destructive color adjustment in meta-data.

My bad. Got carried away.

Ketch, I no longer work for AbelCine. Now I'm at Convergent Design, maker of the Odyssey7 & 7Q.

Mitch,

Best wishes to you at Convergent Design.
I stopped by a few weeks ago to see you at Abel and they told me of your new venture.

I miss the idea of an all in one system that the meizler module offered. never cared about the proxy side of it just loved the idea of less cables. Excited to see what they finally come out with for wireless video.

Yes, exactly. I'm very much hoping that Meizler is still in the works, even without Proxy. The whole idea behind it was to integrate and completely build up EPIC into a clean compact design. Even though WMD is out, and there are options for many pieces, I think many shooters would really appreciate and invest into the evolved Meizler.

Hopefully still in the works and just taking a backseat to Dragon at this time.

My guess is that the all in one approach is too risky as protocols and technology is changing too rapidly. Breaking it up may be a little cumbersome, but I bet they can keep it moving forward faster, as components for certain functions are not holding the whole device back.

Further thoughts:

What I'd like to see in a Mini Meizler would be:

Integrated WMD (Wireless FIZ)
Wireless Video, Audio, Timecode
Modular Backplate allowing for IDX, AB, or REDVoltXL Batteries
Announcement of REDVoltXXL Batteries as an option for those wanting to stick with one type of battery
IPad / Tablet control
Ergonomic form factor for handheld / shoulder comfort

well .... if they are gonna do all that ... I sure hope they just give us an IPad / Tablet control option first.

Yep, I'm with Mark, this would be so f-ing cool. Clients and directors would love it.

Ah. I'll miss your face around there and online Mitch. Good luck. Lots of folks moving around and getting nabbed up by other folks before the year is out.

Thanks, I think Ted Schilowitz & I announced our moves within a few days of one another, which led to a lot of interesting phone calls!

Martin, Ketch - I don't want to take up bandwidth with multiple posts. Thanks. I look forward to my new opportunities and we have some cool stuff cooking. I hope to see you all at NAB and I plan to be around here more in the future.

+1 on all that, i also think Proxy is not so important, but the all in one aspect, and especially Cable Clutter Free, Wireless TC and Meta Control would be one of the Killer Points for the EPIC / Dragon Shooting Future… Assistants /DPs / Clients would just love it.
