THE LIST: Camera Insurance / Equipement Insurance Companies

Has anyone using this provider had to file a claim? Thats what I would like to know, how well they deal with claims. This seems to be a pretty damn good option.

We just had a claim with them, they paid fast, no problems. We need to do lunch......

Do these companies provide one million in liability as well? Would be great to get a package going.

(EDIT)
Somehow didn't see Peter's post above mine :D

What are some of the production liability prices that you guys are getting? I got quoted $3800 for the year locally.

Brandon,

That does not sound right. A 1 million dollar liability policy is around $500 for the year. Couple with that with 50k gear insurance, and for personal use you are looking at less than $1,500.

For Australian companies FIUA Film Insurance Underwriters Australia have been very good to me and looked after all my needs.

Mark do you have any personal experience with them? If so, do you have your reps contact info? Post if you got it and I'll add to the list.

fracturedatlas.org also has insurance options.

I'm insured under the Steadicam Program from WP Dolle insurance. (I can't link directly to the page - you should see "steadicam program" on the blue left sidebar.)

You must be a member of the Steadicam Operators Association (one-time $150 fee) and you don't necessarily have to be a steadicam op or own any steadicam equipment.

My yearly premium for coverage on ~$80,000 worth of gear is $1,000. Deductible is $1000
Accidental damage/loss/theft/water damage etc all covered.

My epic M was damaged on a shoot and the brain/SSD/PL mount had to be replaced. The production company I was working for was insured with Fireman's Fund Insurance/Entertainment claims. The process for settlement was quick and easy. They covered the purchase price of the everything that was damaged. Fireman's Fund rocks!

I don't always know which company is connected to which but I do know we have our cameras insured through Reiff & Associates, http://www.reiffinsurance.com/. But my policy has both Reiff & Associates and One Beacon Insurance Company on it. We recently had some of our equipment stolen (not my RED thank goodness, which is now at RED for a trade in on an Epic). They replied very promptly to our claim, made a very fair settlement and did one thing I was really impressed with. A few of the cameras that were stolen were really old and cannot readily be replaced. They told us that if we found ones to replace the stolen ones and it cost more than they gave us, they would make up the difference. (Anyone have an old Lindhof they don't want?) They are a pleasure to do business with.

I had insurance with these folks, never had to make a claim but you can do it online instantly and get coverage. If over a certain dollar amount deductible is $750 for larger packages. Allow for scheduled re, EpicX and anything priced over $5k single item, but unscheduled under $5k if you have a small thing stolen still $750 deductible which seems not so good, you would have to have total loss which nobody wants to happen.

But for higher ticket items seems like its good insurance.

Hey everyone,

Hope I can finally contribute a bit to the community. Reduser saved me when I was suddenly a DIT on the set of "Insidious."

I purchased a Scarlet-X yesterday, called and left Kat Wong a voicemail at the number listed. She responded at 9:30am this morning. She is extremely easy to speak with, very knowledgeable, and insightful beyond equipment coverage. She had a detailed email to me by 10am. I'll update soon with rate information.

She certainly knows and appreciates the recommendations coming from the forums, and asked me to provide her direct line, as she is frequently mobile and sometimes does not catch her office voicemail promptly.

Kat's direct line is:

Yah, that's the local guys rate.

You think that's bad? I had two shoots last year where I just bought the policy for the day, and I spent 1800 one day and 1000 the other. Total rip off, but they were the cheapest in the city (Vegas).

So I should probably go with an online company it seems...

Keep the feedback coming, hope things are going well with Kat.

Nice...
Edit:

Just set up my policy with Kat Wong, very helpful.

She request me if somehow her information on reduser can be change;

Kat. Wong Francis L. Dean & Associates. (888) 416-9091 ext 106

Katherine Wong

She explain me that, its better for us (redusers) to contact her directly.

Just wanted to add my 2 bits after calling several of the people/agencies mentioned in this thread. First, I can echo that Kat Wong at Francis L. Dean and Associates was very helpful, informative, and responsive to all my inquiries, and her quote was very attractive. I almost went with her company. I also received prompt communications from folks at Film Emporium and American Entertainment Insurance (who used to be one company but are now separate, Emporium in NY, AEI in Los Angeles). All that said, I wound up going with Taylor and Taylor, and my contact there was:

Lisa Caracciolo – Senior Account Executive
Taylor & Taylor Associates, Inc. / Taylor & Taylor, Ltd.
16 East 40th Street, 11th Floor, New York, NY 10016
Phone: 212-490-8511, Ext. 526

Their premium was slightly lower than the one offered by Dean and Associates, though the deductible was $500 instead of $250. And Lisa and her colleagues worked very quickly to get my coverage rolling all in the space of a single day. I will be doing some filming on or near water (from boats and on shore), the kind of risk that a couple of the other companies needed to sign off on beforehand (and presumably might have required additional premium based on specifics of a shoot or would have denied coverage in case of accidental damage). Taylor and Taylor required no such notice. If I was going to shoot underwater, yes, but they didn't require anything extraordinary to shoot from a vessel. So that was all nice for me.

I don't know if they'd be the best solution for folks with much more involved production elements who want coverages for liability, shooting delays, file loss, etc. But I'm just a tiny, solo operation, and all I really wanted coverage for was theft or accidental damage to the equipment. With Taylor and Taylor, I'm getting that for a decent price that covers the kinds of perils you'd expect and that will be in force no matter where in the world I happen to travel with the camera.
