  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The "LED" light Group Buy

Really appreciate all your efforts Ketch! Thanks for the update. I was meant to be looking at the first unit down here in Melbourne today - but a shipping stuff up delayed it until tomorrow. Kinda glad now, as this puts to rest the concern of buying one and then having the group buy come back and haunt me.

Which accessories for the Area 48 do you consider must-haves?

Sure thing Mark!!

I would most definitely not want to be without the V-Lock or AB Battery mount, as well as the Soft Box, which they called Snap Bag, and the Snap Grid can also be very nice to direct light to a more defined spot.

As far as the carry Bags themselves I have yet to see them, so I can't pronounce myself as if they did a good job or not, but in order to preserve the fixtures as nicely as possible for as long as possible, I would strongly recommend a case.

Thanks! Do you like the softbox for the added diffusion it provides? Or is it more about the greater control that having the narrower beam spread offers?

Because of the diffusion, with light and Skin, well, cars as well, and Macro work too, but most important for skin, the Diffusion offered by a Good Soft Box is a MUST.

I wanted to share couple of shots from my friend Stefano Spiti from Milan, Italy, taken during his visit to Cameraimage.

The Area 48 dop Choice SNAPBAG & SNAPGRID. I know I'll be getting at list couple of this for my Area 48.

Also just a heads up to let you know that
Blair, had two cases made, one is for a two light case + accessories, and the other for a 3 light + accessories. This are hard type for travel and shipping, for the Soft ones BB&S have their own made which they should be really great, yet I have not seen them nor used them myself as of yet, only seen the actual designs.

Here are couple of pics of the cases, shown here are the 3 Light and 2 light interior views, fully loaded under the 50lb airline limit, Blair will answer any questions you might have.

After I worked with the Area 48s I was in love and wanted them to have a proper case. I designed two versions, one for 3 A48s and not much else, the other for 2 A48s with AKS, worked with Rick and Tanner at Caseman. I wanted to keep total weight under 50 lbs for fly pack.

The outer hard case shell for both is the SKB 3i-2317-14B-E, made in California, similar to a Peli but lighter weight for the same capacity. It has nice wheels, retractable handle, 5 closures and only 21 lbs empty.

3HC - the 3 light Hard Compact case is intended for situations where proper grip (stands and such) are part of the mix. It would make a sturdy keeper for the fixtures on a grip truck or studio shelf with the added benefit of being ready to roll as needed. Has room for V-mount plate to live on the back of the A48 and slots for 3 TVML "collars" for attaching the fixtures to stands with baby pins.

2X "All Access" - this is the case I really wanted to make for field assignments where there is no G&E, or where I have to be self contained or when I need to be as mobile as possible. The case holds 2 A48s (wide enough for a battery plate to ride affixed to the back), their power cables, 4 phosphor panels (BB&S makes 6 types), 3 compact stands (Matthews MERF or reverse), 2 TVML "collars", 2 snap grids, 2 snap bags, 2 16"x20" B/W foam core in the lid, 2 pivoting pins with velcro for holding the foam core on a stand, a couple of mirrors designed for car visors that have springy clips that I can rig onto the foam core or the barn doors of the A48s themselves, etc. Depending on how much of the AKS you decide to put in you could go over 50 lbs pretty easy but even with everything I listed you should be just under 60 lbs.

I've been meaning to get together with BBS and put together a proper list of contents, work out all the details and have them add the 2X "All Access" field kit to their offerings. It is my belief that I am not the only person who would appreciate a self-contained kit on wheels robust enough to handle field usage. If you've already bought your A48s and just want cases let me know and I'll hook you up with Caseman.

In the interest of full disclosure, if I can help Caseman sell a dozen of them I get a free one, hope no one is offended.

Cheers - #19

Fair enough.

Heck that is a LOT of time designing that layout, you at least deserve a free one!

Which brands/models of v-mount batteries do you need to power the Area 48 reliably? I've got a couple of 160w/hr GlobalMediaPro batteries, but they can cut out at higher power settings.

What do people recommend?

What is the current rating for the battery... IIRC you need about 10A to get full intensity continuous operation. There are a lot of batteries that will do the job. I use Bebob V90RM's (12A peak)

Also used the Bebob Rouge 90RM's as well as the Blueshape's 100's, as well as the Red Bricks all of which worked just fine.

Hi ketch,

I had the red bricks, fully charged, only go to high 90% illumination, whilst two PAG PL 96e's, linked powered at 100%, for 1hour and twenty minutes.

Hi Mark,

I can't remember the exact % illumination, at which the Area 48 shut down and regulated to the max available, from the Red Bricks. May have been 97% or so. I also did not run a test to determine the length of time that the RED bricks would support the regulated max. BTW, the Area 48 did exactly what it was programmed to do, in shutting down and re-striking at the max available, for the power source. OTOH, I already own the PAG's, so no real interest, beyond what I already have done. I am sure others here have a RED brick to test. If not and someone is really interested, I am in So. Cal..

Thank you very much
