  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The "LED" light Group Buy

It's just a question of where you put your phosphor :)

As you probably know, most phosphor based white LEDs are blue LEDs with a phosphor coating that broadens the wavelengths to make the light white.
Now the problem with phosphor based white leads is that the heat produced by the diode (LED) can damage the phosphor coating, therefore you can apply only a limited amount of materials that can take that kind of heating. Remote phosphor helps to avoid this problem by distancing the phosphor coating from the heat of the diode, alas giving you the possibility to use a wider range of materials in the phosphor diffusion plate (remote phosphor plate) which results in better diffusion, higher CRI, maintenance of the color temperature while dimming and a longer endurance of the chosen color temperature over time.

So there are a lot of advantages to remote phosphor LED units while being basically the same.

Best regards,
Ulrik Gerber (BB&S)

Welcome to Reduser Ulrik and thanks for your input on the Phosphor Media.

@Ketch,

Thanks for answers to all my questions! I have a couple more:

My pleasure Antony, and thank you for the questions, as they surely have helped providing much detail information to the rest of the community interested in this Group Buy, now we hopefully got you closer to pull the trigger... ;)

+) Barndoors: The ones on the Area48 site are Black. The photos uploaded on RU have Silver (reflective) surface.
Q15) Is only one of these (Silver or Black) included in the package? Is there benefit having both? Why did you (if you have already) choose the silver one?

It is only standard Matte Black, or with the Silver reflective material applied to as an extra. I chose to have the silver reflective material on the first 3 units I purchased as I wanted to have the additional spread of the light, next units will be with Black to better control light spills, and I'll use the SnapBag on them.

+) Q16) SNAPBAG : Is this same as the '2058 Softbag 1 unit'. Is the bag double unit 2 x single bags, or a fitting that goes over two x Area48 lights?

The SnapBag, goes over the Barn-doors of each Individual Area 48 Soft Fixture, so you'll need ONE x Unit, and is a "SOFTBOX" the SoftBag and Double Soft Bags are actual Carry on BAGS to place the Fixture and accessories in for transport.

+) Q17) The BBS website mentions that there is 'Reflective Scrim' accessory. Is this the same as the SNAPBAG / SOFTBAG?

The Scrim Accessory is the Silver reflective material that which gets applied to the Barn-doors, however since they are developing new accessories, and anything that could be ready before this Group Buy closes after NAB, will be offered as part of IT at the discount reached accordingly.

Being from Denmark, I'm really proud of these guys accomplishment with this light. Looks extremely elegant and efficient.
few questions: can the battery plate be chosen as AB as well?
what exactly comes in the package when you buy the fixture listed at $1,800 (before the discounts). Any accessories? Or do they need to be purchased separately?
whats the total power of the unit? How many LED's and what's the wattage of each? Would love to see a shot of the fixture without the filter in front.
thanx for putting this together.

Hey Ketch,
Wow, but will it have an Anton Bauer gold mount option?

Good news guys, there is also a AB Gold battery mount version!

Hopefully this will get few more users interested in this great Fixtures!!

Hi Ketch,

Are the List Price with or without VAT ?

(i am today for the first time in Rome...)

Apologies if this was covered earlier in this thread, but how would these lights perform for green screen work? Is gelling them green possible or even recommended?

Thank you,

PCG

How would you rate the light throw Ketch? Are there any lux/distance numbers?

Hey Ketch,

I'm curious how you would compare this light to the micro plasma that Zacuto are working on? I'm not sure if you've seen it, but I've been eagerly waiting for its release since NAB last year. They have just delayed again until late summer.

That unit is quoted as 2000 lumens for 5600 while a LitePanels 1x1 is 1265 lumens. I find it hard to believe this unit produces 10K! As Michel notes above, it would great to know lux/distance numbers.

I blown away daily by how all these technologies evolve!

Best Regards,

Justin

Guys, this are IMO the absolute best LED fixtures out there, super Bright, True Color out put, extremely high CRI, Soft even trow, perfect for skin tones and or Green Blue Screen work, great for reflective surface or for further filtering, as well as fantastic as they are strait light output thru the Phosphor Media in either 3200k or my favorite 5600k.

Stop by at their boot at NAB and check them out for yourselves, and you'll agree with me.

I have not measured the Lux/Trow, but it will be in check with similar fixtures yet stronger then Kinoflow type fluorescent tubes, and better then any other LED's tested so far, just remember that this are LED Soft, not spot, and not meant for Trow, but meant for even soft wide trow of perfectly smooth soft lighting to illuminate your subject area.

Their Ledonardo's, which will be Desisti's rehoused Fresnels with a powerful LED, will be for trow, none of this type of fixtures are for trow, again, check them all out at NAB compare, and then come back here to join this group buy, as I know you'll not find a better option/price out there..

Thanks for arranging this group buy Ketch! These lights are very exciting, exactly what I have been looking for. Put me down for 2 units. Just curious, does the discount include accessories also? For example, if I order additional phosporized panels, v-mount battery plates and the lights, does the group discount apply to the final total, or just the lights only?

I love their ability to change color temp with different panels. Earlier LED's have all had very singular spectral representation. Also if the brightness is anything like you are describing, I'll be very happy indeed!

My pleasure Michael and now thanks to you we are only ONE unit short to get the 20% Discount, and yes, the discount is applied to the full order with all accessories.

The factor that you don't deal with standard filters, but a specific high output true color Phosphor Media, makes a huge different and zero loss of light,m in fact it actually gives out more thnaks to this Media, all you have to do is buy what ever Phosphor media you need either the 3200k or the 5600k or get two of each, and then you can have your two units as both 3600k or 5600k as needed.

The Area 48 Soft will actually perform extremely well for FX work on both Green or Blue Screens, as they have a very well spread out even trow of Soft light and it's temperature is spot on with true color and high CRI.

Remember that when working with Green or Blue Screens, your lighting becomes the most important thing, because if you don't have proper lighting that has the capacity to illuminate the entirety of the Screen on Frame, then your keying will become more difficult, were if it is evenly spread light and your screen beautifully illuminated as in the sample below lit with the Area 48 Soft LED fixtures, then you have a much better start at your FX work.

I went to the booth a NAB .... All I can say is wow ... It's lighter then holding a sun reflector yet outputs a sunset type light ... Is just crazy cool. The light is soft yet directional, just amazing. They are going to send me some spectral sheets, though I really don't need them since my feature is monochrome and it will be more then sufficient for corporate stuff. It produces absolutely no heat, which is crazy - there are a lot of situations where this will help in safety. I am going to look a bit more at the battery option, since after I have seen this in action, it could change my entire grips workflow.

I went looking and could not find, anybody know where this booth is?

thx, Erich

nice lamp. I'm in for 3 units.

Great, thanks Antony!

Even so the videographer could have done a much better job on the framing and exposure in some shots, and show more of the actual fixtures instead of a talking head but cool just the same... ;)

PS: The white fixtures are part of a special order for Studio environment, the standard fixtures are in Matte Black!
