The Internal Focus Motor Thread

v 1.2 .. Now with fine lens control and usb to serial support.

Im have not followed this development to closely.. could any one explain "usb to serial suport".

also is there any chance that the fine lens control could be added also to the red mote? If the red mote scroll wheel would do two lapse from close focus to infinite with smooth focus on EF lenses then that would be great.

hooking up the iphone usb to this serial port and have usb focus that way would also be fantastic... But I guess thats a pipe dream of mine, or?

Matt was talking about version 1.2 update of our Android app. The android app now supports a usb to serial cable so you can control the camera using a tethered android device. It also now contains sliders to control the iris and focus.

At NAB we were able to show the iPad app controlling the camera via serial port using one of these cables: http://redpark.com/lightning-serial-cable-l2-db9v/ . However, it is not easy to get an app approved in the app store using one of these cables.

We will continue looking at how to improve the REDmote - however, the click wheel on the REDmote (and sidehandle, etc) have 16 steps per rotation - I don't think you want your focus to be mapped to 32 distinct points.

Very cool!

Do you have a wiring diagram for such a serial to usb cable for Android and RED? Is there an off the shelf cable I can buy?

You'd have to make your own cable at the moment...

One of these http://www.red.com/store/products/4-pin-00-lemo-to-flying-lead plus a generic micro USB-to-Serial(DB9) would allow pretty much any android phone or table control the camera with a direct connection.

Plus a micro USB to serial connector available with a quick google

Optitron 2 looks amazing! It will sell like crazy using the red mounts.

WOW!

Not much- we are building the units and tweaking the software until they are build.
Maybe this week.
(I know- not the right place NOT to hype a unique product to no end ;)

So when ready, will you have a formal announcement and let the rest of the world know that they can purchase?...or do we have to email you secretly? ;)

Trust me- there is nothing secret about it - but if you want a secret- we can make it our secret :) (part of our incredible customer service haha)

Jacek, are you guys close to shipping production ready units?

yes we are starting to ship this week. I would like to call for Los Angeles orders first. We are very proud of this product and would like to offer personal customer suppport to the initial customers. It is not practical for out of town customers.
We will obviously support any unit sold anywhere in the world but for practical purposes and instant support Los Angeles area customers are most welcome!!!!

When do we get to see it in action Jacek? This is exciting!
Any time now. I'm trying to find some time to quickly shoot something while I'm baby sitting the manufacturing process. Not for the faint hearted- that's for sure :)
