  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Illumination Experience Tour

Frankly after seeing the 'inner circle' promo I think despite his obvious wealth of knowledge the man is far too caught up in shilling for his various sponsors.

It's excruciating. I'm not sure I could be in the same room as him, let alone pay to be taught by him.

It's funny- when I got the email I liked the subject and wanted to sign up, but then I saw the trailer:

Shane comes off like a control freak who thinks way too much of his opinion (I could be wrong as I don't know him), but Ben is right- I have a hard time just getting through the clips.

Illumination workshop (1-day 8:30AM-7:30PM) $399...reasonable imho
Masterclass (2-day) $1,299...wait, what?

Pricey for sure. Anybody do this?

Flew over to YVR to take the Directing Motion workshop and it was pretty sweet (the HD download is gold for those who didn't attend) and now thinking about flying back over to do this one. There are still crew seats available so maybe it'll be a small crowd.

Jim, Tom and Ryan,

A few of the above who aren't working with Russel Crowe or Jane Fonda or haha Christian Bale, seem to feel Shane is full of himself- yes he is given to hyperbole, but that is just his natural level of excitement and energy. He likes to share his thoughts- crazy or not. And he is very hands on. Some of the way he has structured this is a bit over the top- but that's show biz. I have been around him and found him to be very giving and personally involved. The guy came up the hard way- not an entitled union family member, and is willing to share his knowledge. He clearly is passionate about what he does and explains it very well in person.

If any of you guys go would you please get him to go into his recent experience using the Dragon? He posted some things about loving the color etc, but didn't go into it in depth.

My 2 pesos.

Yeah, I went about a month ago in Austin. And he was a big fan of the C300 & C500. Your right about how passionate he is about is craft, and how it may make some people feel like he's not being real but I fully believe he wants to share his knowledge. One of the big treats was Vincent LaForet was in our class, so like I said in our previous post it was a great book end.

I asked him about the Dragon and he only had good things to say.

I was simply inquiring if anybody has gone. It is, for me anyway, a pricey seminar so I was curious if anybody had anything to report. I appreciate the feedback. As for Shane: nothing but respect for the man. He has done some amazing work throughout the years and in my view earns extra points in expanding his career into different areas. To reinvent yourself is good business. Things have changed in our industry and for even top players - I consider him a top player - new approaches have to be taken to sustain yourself and grow. I am an eternal student. I have no doubts I can learn endlessly from this guy. Any hesitation comes from the fear that theses seminars are a bit too basic and/or crowded which is why it's always good to hear from others...weighing the price factor against the inspiration factor.
But it's not often one can see a guy like Shane do his thang up close.

I signed up for the Saturday in Brooklyn. If any redusers are around, would love to connect. PM me. I wouldn't even bother asking him about the DRAGON (which I have now). I understand that these guys have their relationships and need to say the things they need to. Can't worry about that shizzz.

I just got back after the first day and I have to say - Shane was the most eloquent, honest, down-to-earth, self-deprecating, humorous, extermely generous and most insightful teacher I've ever had teaching Cinematography! Seriously.

I have some pics up on my twitter feed https://twitter.com/indiancowboy

Nikhil, I took the class as well in Irvine, CA and I feel the same way you do, Shane is great! Good luck tomorrow and have fun! ;)

I signed up for both days in Toronto, early next week. Looking forward to it, even though it made me have to turn down a boatload of work....

Just got back from Chicago Day 1.
Really enjoyed it. Shane seems like a great dude. Very talented obviously. Very willing to share. Great and often hilarious rapport with his crew. Entertaining as well as informative. Always nice to see how people approach their work. For me - definitely worth it. I would go again in a blink. Great artist, technician and communicator.
