  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Hobbit...

One of my most anticipated films...shot on the best...can't wait for 24hrs of behind the scenes footage... hopefully a whole tribute section on the dvd about epic. Congratulations Red team!!!

Hobbits on Red Epics.

Jackson has a long history with RED, dating back to when he directed the short film 'Crossing the Line' as a very early test of prototype RED ONE cameras. "I have always liked the look of Red footage." he says, "I'm not a scientist or mathematician, but the image Red produces has a much more filmic feel than most of the other digital formats. I find the picture quality appealing and attractive...

Jim

Seeing is believing and I am not saying that I was a "Skeptic" in the beginning but seeing Peter Jackson's "Crossing the line" was the reason I plunked down my reservation for a RED ONE....aaaand maybe the "Milk Girls" clip as well. I have grown my career on RED and with RED, its a good feeling to sit back and see this come full circle and beyond my wildest expectations.

This is an incredible achievement for RED. Congratulations team!! I am so happy the Hobbit will be shot on RED! :)

Congratulations Jim & the entire Red team!!!...imo, this is the #1 high profile film in the world. Just amazing news, although not unexpected as Epic is undoubtedly the best choice for this project.

Peter is my hero. The Hobbit is my favorite book. It just doesn't get much better than this. :-)

The Hobbit has been my favorite book since forever. Jim, you're my hero.

That article says, Peter Jackson ordered 30 cameras. Why so many?

30 divided by 2 + 15. Peter Jackson likes to run three sets at a time plus models etc as 5 thats three cameras 3D per set including back ups.

it's in 3D, that is only 15 cams if they use them all as 3D set ups. different units, different locations, multiple sets filming at the same time, multi-cam shots, redundancies..... I could see them needing that many (if that is actually how many they got).

mmmm, looks like Engadeget has taken to biting my lingo ; )

"...widespread availability by NAB in April, though he's not making any promises there. That's how RED rolls. PR after the break."
I don't see RED producing a 3K S35 camera with the current MX sensor.
What are they to do to drop the rez to 3K? Half Debayer? Crop the sensor? Line Skip?
Thats not how RED rolls.

Ah, thank you. I didn't think about the 3D aspect. 15 set-ups is quite understandable, expecially if he wants spares and maybe needs some for shooting miniatures as well.

This was the only book I ever bought as a child because it was the only true fantasy book that I could relate to with my ADD....Now RED is here in my homeland shooting what am sure will be an immensely successful production. Feels like a coming home....

My congratulations to the team at RED, not to mention the families that continue to support you all in your endeavors, it's been a haul, but what an accomplishment. This is a great day for the entire Red community.

Great news Jim. You must be proud.

Tell Peter to come here if he needs some great DITs! :-)

Really Fantastic news for RED !!!

With this story about 15 Epic 3D sets, does anybody think PJ is gonna try a "Matrix" effect... I mean filming subjects with 15 sets around him in 3D ?

I have been waiting for this movie sense the last LOTR, now I really can't wait!

It could be something like this:
1st Unit: 8 cameras
Miniature Unit: 4 cameras
2nd Unit: 4 cameras
3rd Unit: 4 cameras
2nd Miniature Unit: 4 cameras

Plus 6 other cameras for additional units ( if I remember correctly there were 7 separate units on LOTR) and/or backup. No Matrix/bullet time fx, hopefully...

As much as I love Jackson's work, it'd be nice to hear from the cinematographer of the Hobbit movies...(Andrew Lesnie?)..we read lots of stuff coming from directors around here, but it won't hurt for once to hear from dps, operators and assistants who already have had a chance to test the new camera...
