  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Helium Confusion..or Frustration...

Yeah Prores 4444 in Log3G10/RWG (doesn't need to bake any Luts in)
would make sense as an option in the production environment!

I had one client so far that I shot DNXHR for, apart from that sometimes I shoot 4k 422HQ in Log3G10/RWG holds up really well.

i did not miss that bro, as i said clearly,"apart from 8k, apart from an improvement in resolution",i don't know how could you miss that? Please read and understand what i am saying and then reply to me with logic. As i said clearly don't attack me with stupidity...and i humbly request you that if you don't have anything substantial to add to this discussion/thread, then please don't overcrowd it with unnecessary posts...

Did you watch that video?

Because you claim to, but I wonder...

Is it not spelled out in the side by side?

The whole point of the video?

If you've been spending your life defending RED (congratulations, join the club), then how did you defend the Mysterium sensor to MX? Incremental? More resolution? Was that Just as expensive with inflation?

Most important when you were defending RED, did you stop and think about how it was built on RESOLUTION, and many years people complained 4K was too much, useless, "unnecessary" to quote you. Now you request they stop pushing to higher resolutions? Ok... And to repeat my VALID FUCKING POINT, 8K is the next standard from 4K. NOT "6K" like your Dragon. You are very dense. Congratulations for being able to turn a RED camera on, perhaps Mark Toia was right about that as well "simple to use, anyone can use it."

I hope the PC fairies don't come out in droves, though my optimism ... well I got out of bed to write this so congratulations on the Helium Frustration. First world problems... ?

Matt,

Whatever anybody else says its best not to respond with your language and sarcasm. Leave that to lesser people. Statements like "8k is the next standard" is only a prediction which may or may not turn out to be correct. Improvements in camera resolution where undoubtably a revolution when it went from SD to HD and then another major step forward to 4K but further improvements in the resolution race see diminishing improvements.

Listen carefully to what Toia says in the video from 4min 20sec and its not just about the number of pixels or that the camera is 8K. He is raving about the quality of the image especially the low noise when he pushes the shadows. Whilst resolution plays a part in this image quality its only one factor out of many.

PS Don't read me wrong that resolution doesn't matter I own a CF Weapon with a 8K Helium soon to be replaced with an 8K VV chip (fingers crossed)

Positives
1) 8k gives better supersampled 1080p and 4k. https://imgur.com/hwR4L0w
2) Helium is about a stop faster/more sensitive.
3) Noise is smaller/finer.

Negatives
1) More data.
2) Highspeed framerates more cropped.
3) Some banding issues (the green band problem).

Why this matters is if you have done any testing you will realize prores is about a stop cleaner than full debayer raw. Talking about normal compression ratios like 6:1. This is huge. Prores grain noise structure is good. It is done pre-r3d compression.

(...)

What gets writen to ProRes - full debayer or less?

One other thing, is that a lot of S35 lenses (especially vintage ones) don't cover the full 8K/6K sensor area, as 8K/6K FF is slightly bigger than S35. One other advantage of Helium is that you can use S35 glass and still be at 6K/7K resolution, while on Dragon, you have to go to 4K/5K. I think Jarred mentioned that somewhere as well.

Also, in post, having that extra resolution is great if you want to punch in on a 4K timeline (up to 120% zoom is indistinguishable), or to move the frame up or down (which I do a lot when shooting in 2.39:1 aspect ratio). Not to mention great downscaling, and less noise in general.
