  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo...

AMC Theaters list many films as a "Digital Presentation" but it's probably digital 2K. I have a suspicion that showing a film in San Diego in 4K is overkill. I'm probably going to have to drive to Los Angeles to see a film in 4K

I hate to pull attention away from the resolution fiesta, but my big interest will be in seeing how the camera(s) appear to handle latitude, and the skill of the DP in lighting and composition for the benefit of the tool he's using and story being told. Curious to what extent HDRx was used with Epic, and whether the generally overcast and moody look of the film played to the benefit of a video camera for this application, vs film or Alexa's 14.5 stops.

Regal Pinnacle Stadium 18 & IMAX in Knoxville, TN is showing TGWTDT in 4k. I just spoke with a projectionist there who confirmed that all their screens are digital and have 4k projectors and TGWTDT is 4k. If you live in the area, that's where to go.

Congrats, Michael and Ian!

Thanks for the illuminating CreativeCow article, BTW!

On a technical scale, the data footprint of this film was probably in the neighborhood of 55 terabytes of total storage for the DI alone.

Michael, one question: how much of that was DPX files? if somehow we could move everyone from DPX over to EXRs in some compressed format (either lossless PIZ/ZIP, or extremely high quality lossy, eg B44), how many TB do you think you could have saved?

Understand it would push up the requirements for realtime playback a bit (to handle the decompression) but with B44 it's not supposed to be that bad, right?

I'm just looking for ways to make things even easier... so do you think we should push for universal, fast EXR support in post? Or DPX still better for you?

I will normally be the first to argue that 1080p or 2k is "good enough". I've seen plenty of 2k projections that looked just fine (and to be fair, plenty that didn't).

I caught an advanced screening last night that was shown in 4k. I hate to admit it but I think I'm singing a different tune. It made a huge difference. If you can, seek out a theater showing it in 4k. It is absolutely gorgeous.

Will be interesting to so the american translation!

Impressive.

I'm just waiting for a KDM to arrive, if it doesn't arrive before Thursday I'll have to wait until the new year to watch it (as I am going away for the Christmas week). Pain in the ass. Irony is it'll probably arrive but won't unlock until Midnight on Friday.

Can't wait.

Prometheus trailer tomorrow

Hobbit trailer today

GWDT drive was in my hands a few hours ago. But no key to unlock it.

Bruce-

The 55 or so terabytes in question are made up almost exclusively of DPX files. Working with EXR would absolutely be a better way to go about DI's like this in the future, -Li is implementing a fully linear DI later in 2012. That, plus the fact that a VFX pipeline is better suited for EXR, makes for a much smoother transition between I/O of VFX and color.

AMC Tyler in Riverside, CA (which has all Sony 4K projectors) says that they have the content in 4K for GWDT.

Great work Michael and Ian! I can't wait to see GWDT in January.

I just found this pic.

The ASC magazine will have many RED covers in 2012.

Nice! Yes, please pioneer this :)

We shall do our best to support you by shelling out cash to see the movies you guys do :P

And I will irritate all of the software companies with EXR support demands! Well, at least Resolve is ready...

wow I wanna say we have more than 7 4K projectors here in Austin.

most of them are Sony 4K, some Texas Instruments and one Digi IMAX.

A good friend of mine saw Revenge of The Sith in 2K back in 2005. He took a 2hr bus ride across town to do so (he refuses to drive).

We really need more 4K projectors out there, so crazy.

Any 4k in Philly? I will be there for the weekend, So better chance to find a 4k theater than in middle of the mountains in New England.
