Laowa 24mm Macro Probe Lens

Laowa 24mm Macro Probe Lens

A long time ago Inon made probe lens but the optics were terrible not yielding any part of the image sharp. This version from Laowa looks to be far superior. I would be very interested in trying this out for wide angle macro video underwater. I will probably try and have a port built for it to fit a Nauticam housing.
Do any of you have any thoughts on this. I do know that the BBC built something similar for Blue Planet 2.

Check out these links.

We've been working with Venus Optics on this for some time. Gates users will have something soon. More to follow....

Hi everyone,

I saw the Hydroflex clip with the remote operation for the Zeiss CZ2 15-30 and I was wondering if there's other housing alternatives on the market to shoot with that one lens?

Thanks in advance,
Vincent.

Hi Vincent,

The Gates Deep Weapon accepts the Angeniuex Optimo 15-40, similar in size and length to the Zeiss CZ 15-30, should not be an issue. For the Angie, SP80 dome port and PE486E + 343E port extenders, that should do it for you. Check with John E to verify.

ZEISS CZ2 15-30

ZEISS CZ2 15-30

Hi Vincent,

We tested this lens back in June. Superb lens, very sharp with the Gates 10" glass dome port. Specs suggest it will work well with the 8" as well.

Yes it works. With the correct port extenders just about any lens out there can be adapted to these housings. The only limitation on the Pro Action is monitor choice, (afaik), the integrated Starlite being the only option. Nice monitor, but the size of it indicates eagle-eye visual acuity to nail critical focus underwater, even in magnify mode. The only reason I use the 7" monitor is because John doesn't make a housing for the 9" mid-life crisis version. :-)

Another thing to note, moving from the 8" to the 10" dome, which you should do with the specific lens here under discussion, dome port/lens combination nodal point position moves accordingly, that's where the stackable port extenders come in most handy.

Post a pic of your rig here when/if you can Vincent, would be interesting to hear your thoughts.

Cheers

Thanks Tom, for posting the system chart link. Pro Action and Pro Explore do indeed have 6, 8 and 10" port systems options.

However.... an important distinction must be made between lenses that can physically fit into PA / PX, and what is supported with the Lens Gear Drive.

More specifically, PA / PX were designed for small size / travel. This means the Lens Gear Drives (LGD's) support DSLR and compact PL glass (like the Zeiss CP3 primes and RED 18-50). Larger lenses -- like the Zeiss 15-30 -- will physically fit in PA / PX, but the 114mm focus rings is just outside the envelope of support. The maximum lens ring size is 102mm.

For larger PL lenses e.g. Ultra Primes, Anamorphics, etc, DEEP WEAPON is the answer. It handles *any* lens with 8 and 10" port systems. Lens Control Systems, too like ARRI, Teradek and cMotion. It's a Swiss Army Knife, configurable to do just about anything.

Having said all that, Vincent, if you really must use the 15-30 in the smaller PA / PX, then let's discuss offline. A custom solution just for you?

Tom, many thanks for your help on this, really appreciated.
As soon as possible, I will post about this set-up.

John, thanks for your time. As you might imagine, there's a reason why I'm that interested into the PA.
I'd like to discuss more about that offline if possible, I could explain you where I'm going with this and of course, a custom solution would be amazing.
Just in case, here's my email: vincentkardasik(at)lkrtel.com
Once again, I really appreciate your time and advices.

Hi Mauricio - I have used the previous version of the Tokina 16-28 Cine Zoom and found it to be very nice, if limited in zoom range. Currently using the Canon 16-35 in the Gates Pro Explorer (PX) principally due to the lack of a 3rd control for iris and the Canon lens does electronic iris. I also have the Sigma 18-36 Cine Zoom which is also really nice, although due to the same issue above I will be putting both lenses on the market...

All that aside, I am totally loving the PX housing for it's size, agility and topside weight savings. Can't wait to actually travel with this puppy!

Ron

Hi Ron- Great to hear from you and thanks for your insight. The new Tokina Cinema Vista 16-28mm II T3 reads well with many improvements and covers 8k... so a good contender overall.
Price point is not too bad as well.

Best

Hey Tom, any of the Red monitors can be mounted on the Pro Action Housing mate.
There is a blanking plug near the left handle that can have a bulkhead fitted and accommodate the three Red monitor options.

I’m currently using RT7 on my PA and loving it.

Thanks Pete,

PA is a great housing, I am considering the PX for more cam control, but will definitely keep my RT-7 if I go that route.

In the meantime I've added rebreather to the mix, fantastic bottom times and bubble free swimming that lets you get shockingly close to the critters, but not nearly as precise a camera platform as open circuit wrt small adjustments to buoyancy. Any CCR guys out there, tips, tricks and hacks much appreciated.

On my Prism2 I've added the Shearwater NERD2 (Near Eye Remote Display), amazing little unit for monitoring depth/PO2 without having to take your eye off the shot.
