  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

just read the gates pro action new small housing for red cameras...apparently says rated to 150 ft only...I often film 200ft plus on ccr...looks super for most reef shooting,,koz
 
Hi Jim --

150 ft / 45m is the current rated depth. It's a design minimum, actually. We've already tested the housing below 200 feet and it seems to be just fine. The official rating probably won't change, but if you're interested in Pro Action LMK and we can look at additional testing.

For clarification -- Pro Action and DEEP WEAPON are distinctly different products. DW is highly configurable for a wide variety of applications and market needs. A Swiss army knife.

Pro Action is mission specific, with the common thread being Professional Action cam for underwater. Surf, free diving, pole cam, etc. It also happens to be very lightweight for travel. The entire housing + camera + LCD + battery weighted 27lbs / 12kg for my trip to Wildscreen.

Amazing job Mark! I don't think you missed a single species - LOL! How larger is the sardine population theses days?
 
Haha Tom no I was on the boat for most of the shoot filming topside using the Ronin. That was Brocq who is much younger and braver than I am.
Kip we haven't had an amazing Sardine Run Year since 2010 as far as huge bait balls of sardines go but there is always a huge amount of life along that stretch of coast during that time of year. In 2013 we filmed an anchovy bait ball with over a 100 sharks feeding on it. That was picked up by the BBC Shark series and formed part of the opening sequence of the first episode.
 
It's an amazing place Mark! I was in SA a couple years ago, but in December after the sardine run. I'm looking forward to coming back someday at the right time of year. Hopefully the sardines will come back in good numbers in the meantime (if they haven't been overfished)!
 
The humble sardine is under pressure form fisheries as South Africa's entire West Coast population collapsed some time ago. However having said that the Sardine Run didn't happen for about 5 years in a row in the 80s. I am not sure what the current science is saying.

Indeed, lots of stuff ongoing, Jim. Shooters are steadily upgrading to 8K DSMC2 (Weapon, Scarlet-W, Epic-W) for their gigs, and some new activity for big screen (IMAX) productions too. And of course OCEAN is finishing up for release next year.

How are things?

The master files were delivered like a month ago so I expect it should be aired in the sprig. No dates have been revealed yet.

I designed the housing originally for Scarlet MX in 2012. The manufacturing was done by a friend of mine. Nothing like your masterpieces but it's been working ok ever since.

things are slow in Canada,,for some reason the lakes freeze all winter...we just finished 109 underwater tv shows for ..blue realm..we are on ..animal planet and national geographic wild..so when is the gates pro housing prices out..looks like nice travel size..koz.merry xmas to al at Gates..koz
