Tokina 10-17mm Issue (Nikon Mount)

Tokina 10-17mm Issue (Nikon Mount)

We have an Nikon electronic mount on the Epic and just got a Tokina 10-17mm. On the RED electronic Nikon is it unusual for the the lens to stop down when you stop recording? Not only did the lens stop down but then I could not change the aperture with out turning the camera off and on. I have read on this forum that the Tokina 10-17mm is not supported by the electronic mount, does that mean it does weird stuff like this too?

Thanks,
Matt

PS- Just read your post Tom, sounds like good times!

None of the common u/w lenses are supported for the RED Nikon Mount.
They do the craziest stuff and iris control is highly unreliable.
RED promised to add those "u/w" lenses.... nearly a year ago :-/
Cheers,

Michael

Thanks Michael! I don't know where I would be without this thread. The Optitek is coming next week, just in time.

Jim, to be honest anyway, why use a mask that is so limited for getting spare parts, repairs etc....if using for regular commercial work and you want ease of parts supply, quick repairs etc...then OTS or Kirby Morgan are standouts.

Just been through the same issue, can't get hold of diveaways and I have been told they limit supply into each country, not sure whether that is true. We have ended up using OTS

Hey everyone

Don't forget about Long Valley Equipment's Nikon PosiLock Mount for Epic and Scarlet. I use mine with a simple acrylic housing i made. Has iris control and super strong 303 stainless locking ring. Iris is activated by 32 pitch gear.

Doug, the issue at hand is that i don't think it will work with the New Epic Fans....at least if putting it inside a Gates Housing. For other housings, might not be an issue, but definitely the Gates.

The iris gear only moves about 1/4". It doesn't encircle the mount and does not protrude below the mount area. It won't interfere with the new bottom fan. As far as Gates goes, they have one of my mounts so let's see what they say.

Doug, i've got one of your mounts as well....problem is that the gear does not protrude enough through a bulkhead where the mount and lens meet.....in fact it might not have anything to do with the new fans....but the fact that it does not protrude enough. That's the case also even with the Optitek mount. But a special adapter ring/gear was made to allow it to protrude forward. Problem with that NEW gear is that it does not work with the new fans....there for a newly designed gear was made. so, your gear would also have same issues. Just would require a specially made gear to protrude forward. Now on other systems, this is likely not an issue.

I think it would be very easy to modify my Nikon mount - and it only costs $295!

As I say, Gates has one for evaluation - let's see what they do with it.

3D Squid Shoot

3D Squid Shoot

Recently Bob Cranston and i shot another 3d sequence at Catalina Island. In fact we have shot a few in the past few months. But our best run was at Catalina Island where we lucked out and came upon squid boats working the Opalescent Squid at night. That changed our plans and shoot schedule dramatically. Good thing we brought lights.

Here are a few grab frames from our most recent trip using both the Gates 3d rig & 2d camera system:

Beautiful shots Johnny!!

Michael,
No magenta issues at night thank goodness!
BTW: we're making progress with the filters. Slowly, very slowly, but... it's progress!
Hoping the next batch will nail it.
Fingers crossed!

Excellent news. As issue been nailed to specific thing? UV or IR contamination? I was never clear if that had been quantified yet?
Yes, we're still trying to find the best cut off point for the IR.
I think most contamination comes from the IR but Graeme or Rudi are in a far more scientifical position then I am :-)
I already got two filters for my own use which seem to perform more or less "acceptable":

There's still the dreaded magenta noise when you stress the performance of the camera but, under good lighting, it performs way better.
Well.... lets say blue starts to look like blue.
Take this boring shot at 60ft.... looks blueish huh?

Hmmm.... darn.... can't upload a picture here.... needs to be a link :-/
