Thanks Ron, yes the Solas would be used for spot, the bigger 10,000 light has a very wide beam. I am also a little concerned about colour temp. This is very low budget and when I say low I mean really low. The saving grace regarding colour is that there are underwater flares going off which will blow the colour to pieces so I'm hoping that will hide light temp differences.

Just trying to keep it alive. Here's a short from the last couple of weeks in Bonaire. Enjoy...

PS - shot entirely using the Zeiss Distagon T* 15mm, f2.8 Canon mount lens - and, yes, perfectly rectilinear and sharp edge to edge.

Love the action. :)

DSMC Fan 2.0 Upgrade / DEEP EPIC

DSMC Fan 2.0 Upgrade / DEEP EPIC

A quick update while there's a break in the action here.

We just checked the new DSMC Fan (http://www.red.com/store/products/dsmc-fan-2-upgrade-kit-collection-mx) and there are no issues with DEEP EPIC. There is, however, an inteference with the Optitek Nikon mount. If you upgrade to the new fans, you also must switch to the RDCC Nikon or Canon mount.

So....if you are using say Tokina 10-17 or Sigma 15mm or a variety of other lenses that work well in underwater housing with port...but not a particuarly popular land shooting lens, you may be out of luck. I've been asking for support on the above lenses since i purchased my nikon mount and to date no joy...so think before you buy....for some reason RED has not gotten to thos lenses and i'm assuming they may not since not very high priority lenses unless they hear a lot from the Bubble Blower crowd....so please speak up and make your voice heard so we can get some joy on the Nikon mount and our lenses.

RED promised me the would include my Nikkor lenses in the next upgrade.
Not much luck so far.... it was about 6 months ago I guess :-(
The only one which works a bit decent is the 10-24mm.
The rest is hopeless :-(

Well, so far my red nikon mount has sat in its box for several months and only taken out once to discover it does not talk to my two main underwater lenses. This is a huge disappointment in that i also was told my request would be submitted. I'm sure it was submitted, but again, a few voices are likely not enough......

I know and as you said: they are mainly u/w lenses so only very few use them on the Epic....

Who to go directly on this Nikon lens support request? I am all Nikon and would like to send them a note. Please advise.

GReat Images Ron, Michael, et al. Great to have a collaborative forum again!

Thanks Mauricio!
I spoke to Nick Grow about this (nick.grow AT red.com).
Here's an excerpt:

The Nikkor 10-24mm, 18-105mm and Tokina 11-16mm FE are not on the current list of supported lenses, which means they have not yet been characterized by our engineers for fine-tuned autofocus and electronic iris control.
Since these lenses are not yet supported, the camera firmware will load the default Nikon lens profile for rudimentary support so the behavior you are experiencing with these lenses is as expected for now.
Autofocus support is available for select AF-S lenses, electronic iris control is available for select AF-S and AF-D lenses, and touch focus is enabled for select lenses.
We are continuing to characterize more Nikon lenses weekly and we bumped up your lenses to the top of the priority list.

This was the list I passed along:

  • AF-S Micro NIKKOR 60mm 1:2.8G ED
  • AF-S VR NIKKOR Micro 105mm 1:2.8G ED N
  • AF-S NIKKOR 10-24mm 1:3.5-4.5G ED DX
  • AF-S NIKKOR 18-105mm 1:3.5-5.6G ED DX
  • Tokina FISHEYE 10-17 F3.5-4.5 DX

Thank you Michael- I will prepare a note similar to yours and send it along by Monday.
I use the Optitek Nikon Mount- but as soon as these lenses are supported I would like to move onto an electronic mount version.

be well-
Mauricio -

Maybe I'm crazy, but I could swear that electronic iris is working on my Tokina 10-17 with the Ti Nikon mount. Johnny, or anyone else not seeing this? I haven't used the Optitek in about a year...

Hi Ron,
when i set the iris to the two front (assignable) buttons on the red it DOES work, but for only one instance...as soon as i adjust iris (one time only) i can do that...then next time i go to adjust it, the iris does not open/close...i then have to turn off the camera and reboot to get the iris to move....this was on a few builds ago...and since i've done nothing....Are you able to confirm iris adjustment as well as focus/iris readout ? I see a LOT of posts about the RED nikon mount not working for several electronic lenses....I've not checked in a few months, but likely to do that in a week or so when i have time....before making the jump to Canon---but i sure hope it does not come to that.

Did a quick test with 6 lenses: on all 6 the iris can be altered (not as precise as with the Canon mount though) through the menu.
On the 10-24, 16-35, 60 and the 105mm the iris can be altered (slowly) through the "Iris open/close" buttons, not on the Tokina (well, one or twice, as Johnny said) nor the 24-70mm.
The 10-24, 16-35, 60 and 105mm have auto-focus, the Tokina and 24-70mm have NO auto-focus.
When the iris can be changed through the "Iris open/close" buttons, it means you press once, wait for the iris to have changed to the next stop, press again, wait, press again, wait...
With the Cannon mount you can, for instance, press 4 times quickly and the iris will step up or down those 4 stops.
Way more convenient :-)

Hi Johnny,
Yes, did a shoot this weekend and had problems with not only the Nikon mount but also a Canon 8-15L series using the UP/DOWN buttons set up on the Redmote to control Iris. I did notice that it would do a one-time bump as you say, however, I also found that if I use the cursor keys to get me to the aperture setting in the display that I could completely control the iris that way. I know it's not as convenient as having a instant bump but it does work...
