  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Gentleman's Underwater Bubble Blower Thread

I black shade in the morning before the first dive, and via a large capacity battery and media card, try to keep the housing sealed for the duration of the shoot. Salty air, spray, and pitching boats in heavy seas have been known to ding an expensive camera or two :-)

Welcome to Molokai!!!!

Today its East winds 30 kt 14ft LOL.. Tomorrow is 25 and 10... I think the boat will go tomorrow as usual for saturday. Pound the Camera into oblivion? I have to say Gates makes a good housing and RED makes a vibration resistant camera!

I do not black shade though?

Hi Casey,

These cameras are installed in sealed aluminum (mostly) housings, there is no pressure change involved as they descend. The pressure gradients are absorbed by the housing body itself, most housings have a crush depth beyond which they cannot go, as stated in the manufacturer's literature.

Since the housings are sealed, the heat generated by the camera is likely to increase the temperature inside the housing, this being offset in varying degrees through heat transference via the aluminum housing body to the colder water outside.

Our Epics spend more time underwater than on surface. Let us know whats needed by way of data and we will help, we have most charts for test if needed.

One point many housings are vaccumed so at lower than usualy preasure 6 inches of HG normaly when i the housing. I don't know the effect of this so just note this for info. Also is camera temprature record in the camera log some how.

I don't want to discourage you guys from experimenting. Just the opposite. IR and UV tests are worthwhile and good education for all other reasons, so please don't feel discouraged to play with ideas. It's good fun.

This phenomenon is quite complex and stems from sensor design and quantum efficiency. It is not present in any 3 CCD camera. So, Rudi is right on the money with his observations: the footage from F900 would look prisitine with nice rich blues, vivid colours and high contrast in comparison.

I have discussed it with Jon Shaw and even he admitted "it was way beyond him".

Even if I disclosed what the issue is, it wouldn't help you much as the solution is even more challenging. The good news is that we have taken the problem seriously and spent enormous amount of effort and expense to investigate, reproduce in the lab, measure it and overcome. We will be announcing the solution shortly when we are ready (does it sound familiar?).

And, before you go and ask Graeme Nattress to fix it, there is nothing to fix as this phenomenon, unlike IR or UV contamination, is highly desirable in most other situations. It is just a bummer it is highly undesirable in most situations underwater.

Best fishes from sunny Tasmania!

I thought this worth bringing to the fore again. Page 113. This thread.
Perhaps Pawel has changed his position or has an update on this though. Pawel?

Drawing 6" Hg vacuum, assuming you started at sea level, which is where most underwater housings start :) , should give you an atmospheric pressure inside the housing of about 9000' ft above sea level. The main effect, as far as I know, aside from a reduction in crush depth, is reduced cooling capability, less air molecules to circulate. Anyone out there shooting in places like, say, La Paz (Bolivia) or Machu Pichu, Telluride, Colorado even, experience problems?

And something that should be obvious to us all: RED has always been a very generous company, even to the least of us, let alone to those who have voluntarily contributed to their success. If there is indeed an underwater issue, I hope redusers will help resolve it with the same generous spirit that RED has shown.

LOL.. Well I find Graeme to be a fantastic guy. I think he somehow knows what he is doing just slightly.

Thanks Greg. Was great to talk to you today. Let's all figure this out together.

I agree, sharing is a good thing to do. If theres a problem here, lets fix it amongst us all.

Hi Graeme,

This forum is chock full of top notch underwater professionals, and clearly eager to assist. If you have need of any specific, controlled test shots, I suspect you need only ask. And course Gates is just down the road apiece. Happy to help.

Thanks a million to you and Jarred for getting your feet wet on this one (pun intended).

Best regards.

Thanks John, for jumping in, with Gates behind this effort as well, starting to look like the problem will get deep sixed in very short order. I will be speaking to the Aquatica/Amphibico team in the next couple of days, I have no doubt they will grab the oars as well, lend their considerable expertise where they can.

If at all possible, and I know this is likely asking too much, sorry for that, but might you send Howard and Bob a link to this thread? Their input would be, well, adjectives fail me. I know our Brit colleagues are somewhat averse to the American penchant for superlatives, so I leave it to them to fill in the blanks.

Brits are here !

Never use two superlatives together on an adjective, and it is often necessary to use "the" in front of the superlative, or so google tells me. But then I never was much good at English which I realise is not much good for an Englishman.

Never the less, Howard and Bob are great guys and Id bet would be pleased to help out.

Bob & Howard are already informed and will participate at their discretion.

Yes jarred
A custom build wold work as long as it could be shut off/reverted for out of the water work...
Most of the time it would be land or underwater for a few days at least so no issues having to revert.
FYI I use Scarlet not Epic- Cyan issue is prevalent as well but it seems to behave a little bit better overall but definitely present in natural light.
The other thing to consider is that if a custom warm/ color science is going to be applied- we need to consider how it works with lights.
I always combine both natural and lit sequences... thank you again for all your great support. I am in this for the long run!

In a community where both RED and the users freely exchange information, I find Pawel's insistence on secrecy off-putting.

Ha ! I feel your pain !

Here's an idea. Some while ago we had a problem with a 3D common objective macro rig. The issue was a Red/Magenta reflection both cameras were seeing with in the optical chain, it seemed the IR filter fitted directly in front of the sensor was reflective, the prisim then reflected the IR back to the IR filter and then back again, so there were all sorts of stray reflections with in the lens assembly causing problems. Changing the IR filter for an IR filter that absorbed IR filter worked, in true terms the replacement filter wasnt as good as cutting IR but in this particular set up it worked fine. I have no idea if this is IR related or not, if any one has any idea whats the actual root cause is and happy to discuss openly please let us know.
