  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The future...

What is this, some kind of church?

Yes, red is doing some new things... but they're not exactly re-inventing the wheel or making this world a better place.
I must admit that their marketing strategy is pretty ingenious though.
Steven, you are apparently new to the party. While you are correct that cameras have been around for years and years and RED probably won't have much of an effect on basic life needs, it is also true that the way cameras are being used and by whom is strongly affected.

Yes, this is some kind of church to those of us who have seen the light; rather, seen the need for fewer lights, and have been given the tools to make light magic. The church reference is a good one because just like when Christianity gave the common Romans a personal god, they were empowered to have some degree of equality with the ruling class. You kinda had to be here during the early years to understand the loyalty factor.

You know they are pulling their hair out. Their carefully laid plans to dole out incremental improvements for the next 10 years have been totally blown out of the water.

I read a book by Scott Billups, where he talked about exactly that- this was far before RED existed- how they had all these innovations that needed to be held back, so as not to disrupt the market. Well, RED crushed that idea.

Heh, i guess the Red cameras might make a difference for some around here, having access to cameras producing higher quality images, which were previously only affordable for the highest budget projects... and as such, potentially giving aspiring film-makers and talented people more recognition as they can output higher quality works...

But I still strongly believe that having more details in your doesn't automatically mean you're produce better images.

I'd rather watch a good movie in 360p than a bad one in 8000p.

My bet is that there are several board of directors now trying to figure out how to deal with us... :-)

Jim

They should ask their customers. We'll tell them. ;)

And I'd rather watch a good movie in "8000p" than a good one in "360p"

The striving towards more resolution and higher image quality is for the benefit of those who know what to do with them.
You said as much, then undid it.

I'd rather watch a good movie in 360p than a bad one in 8000p.

Of course. But assuming the both cameras are available to both directors/DPs, you'd perhaps want the team of the good movie to be empowered with technology to shoot the higher resolution?

Agreed to some extent. Using Redcode RAW makes it possible for an untrained shooter to shoot and take his poor footage to trained professionals and get SOMETHING out of the footage. Maybe not perfection, but something very useable. The idea is that at least if you HAVE the camera, then all things are possible because it outperforms anything in its class, which is in many opinions a class by itself.

I'd rather watch a good movie in 360p than a bad one in 8000p.
I would have agreed with you a couple of years ago, but after shooting with the RED One for that period of time, when I sometimes reframe I am frustrated with even the cropped 4k of RED One. I am so spoiled with image clarity that I don't think I would waste my time watching 360p anymore. I'll never know if it was a good movie because I won't watch enough of it to tell.

The future is dependent on those that push... not those that react.

Jim

I disagree, it seems to me both are equally important.. the cause of a chain reaction doesn't necessarily decide its outcome.. the world would be a boring and predictable place if that was true.. and Im not sure it is either of those naturally.. except on very small time scales..

.. except possibly in the world of banking and politics, where change to the status quo is normally an illusion it seems.. or more often a barely concealed bowl of cold sh$t offered up as a prize, that anyone who is prepared to say "thanks for the privilege" can freely eat.. just a thought

Trying to keep on topic....

Panasonic announced some serious financial losses, mostly due to slumping TV sales, and the Yen, compounded by the quake and tsunami. But I have to speculate that while the AF100 has probably been a hit, that an opportunity was missed in not putting out an AF80 that's a similar camera with a fixed lens and great price, or preparing and releasing 4k or 5k, or even 2k cameras by now (the niche that Scarlet, and soon Epic-S will fill). Granted, this is a small division of a huge corporation, but I would like to think Jim would agree with me that leadership has to flow all the way through a company in all directions, and failure to see and prepare for the future in one small area, is potentially endemic to the whole.

Kodak is also in a huge rut, even though they hold huge digital imaging patents, selling them may be the only way to survive, while tanking the company. This article says it all. What struck out most is this line:

"For too long the world's biggest film manufacturer stayed firmly focused on its 20th-century cash cow, and failed to capitalize quickly on its new-wave know-how in digital photography."

I'm reminded of business guru Tom Peters mantra of rewarding excellent failures, and punishing mediocre successes. or Carl Icahn ripping into CEOs who are guilty of hoarding, and sitting on laurels. I would imagine Jim feels that companies that sit like this get what they deserve. Here's Peters:

The industry will be handed over to the most pro active forward thinking group out there. business models of old have changed and are no longer working. Technology is advancing in a manner that if your not leading you will fall behind. this is just the beginning of the proof

No one needs to deal with anyone.

The future awaits the ones awake enough to grasp the notion of shaping it,
possessing and maintaining the clarity, energy, connectedness and love.

Everyone else with insufficient pre-requirements will either adapt with time or burn out,
dissolved by the system incomprehensibly more perfect and powerful
than any system imagined by two legged creatures.

I'm not so sure, if the past 20 years have said anything it's that the modern business mindset is one of innovation taking a back seat because it requires investment where cost cutting yields the illusion of higher profits much sooner, you get the odd Steve Jobs and Jannard and that guy running Ford but for the most part CEOs don't seem to respect innovation all that much, too much risk.

To make matters worse, Sony has also announced losses just shy of a billion dollars, due to all the same issues affecting Panasonic. Very tricky times.

Pushing is about creating something that does not exist into existence. Reacting is reacting to that. It defines a leader against a follower
