  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The future...

Good on you Jim....... "you can never win a battle if you keep on defending.....":yesnod:

The future is dependent on those that push... not those that react.
Amen. BTW, for those discussing WWII (one of my favourite 'things'): the Allies only started winning when they started pushing. So Jim's philosophy is right.

If nobody would push for advancements se would still watch NTSC and PAL.
one of the small things RED brought that annoyed me to hell with Sony Canon ... is a free chocie of fps. It is so simple option bit the giants never gave us that.
How long did it take for cheaper video cameras to give us progressive scan? TOO FUCKING LONG. I love Japan and America in their own ways, but man, I love it when an industry gets a big fat fucking kick in the pants. I don't care who does it, but I'm not surprised that it's Americans who are doing it. Can you imagine a big huge bureaucracy - run by conservative suburbanites - like Sony doing this? Kodak has its Fuji (love 'em both), but RED does not have a Japanese competitor. Not yet, anyway.

The Allies pushed Germany into WWII from very poor post war management of WWI - bam!
That's my understanding from reading history too. The Treaty of Versailles was too onerous.
Amen. BTW, for those discussing WWII (one of my favourite 'things'): the Allies only started winning when they started pushing. So Jim's philosophy is right.
Both the Allies and the Axis were great pushers. But Patton and Montgomery, Zhukov... they pushed most successfully.

Whoa whoa whoa... Jobs changed culture, Jim changed camera culture. Just a bit of a niche in comparison.

I agree that the Jobs comparison is wrong. Jobs after all is said and done will probably be remembered for contributing to a culture that is obsessed with the instant gratification of the here and now. He may be seen in the future as a destructive innovator. But that's for history to decide.

Jannard on the other hand will likely be more comparable to General George S. Patton... an unstoppable juggernaut.

I think it is Jim's passion that keeps me coming back to RED... It is truly contagious. It's knowing that there is a company out there that has a leader with his ear to the ground listening to what is going on... I dont want to buy from a company that has boards of directors and views its customers as numbers. No matter what the competition does or their small advancements are they never will have what RED has... A leader that has vision. A leader who gets excited about making badass cameras!

Thanks for making the Epic Jim! A remarkable machine!

Jim, I was a fighter ( though obviously not a good enough one going by nose on the pic on my avatar :)) and I still train fighters on the side. You will obviously appreciate that the one thing I constantly harp on to my athletes about is the importance of leading the fight, not just reacting. I usually need to constantly remind them that if they are not leading, then they are following - and that this one fact will often determine who wins - much more than power, technical skill or even talent.

The greatest struggle for most in being able to lead I find, is the courage to truly back themselves. But not in the sense that most people interpret. They understandably want to control events and outcomes, but it is those who are brave enough to really put themselves out there, balls and all, accepting that they may have no true control and may be beaten. The ones who are willing to be the most vulnerable are the ones who are the most brave.

I have enjoyed reading your posts regarding your bout with Canon. When pro canon people have sought to rattle you
you have shown that you respect the power of your opponents, that vulnerability is an old friend, and defeat is something you will readily face, as long as it lies on the other side of having laid down everything you have into the fight.

It's impressive. And I strongly admire your application of this on a such an impressive global business level.

Cheers Jim

Best Wishes

Lliam

You are in a unique position to push the envelope so keep on doing it. Good thing you guys don't have a board of directors....they would only slow you down.

What is this, some kind of church?

Yes, red is doing some new things... but they're not exactly re-inventing the wheel or making this world a better place.
I must admit that their marketing strategy is pretty ingenious though.

I think the Jobs comparison is off as well. (Two different people, I don't like comparing people to each other.) Now with that said, with Oakley Jim has had a cultural impact. Not as big as Apple, but pretty dang big relatively speaking for one man.

My bet is that there are several board of directors now trying to figure out how to deal with us... :-)

Jim

The same board of directors who probably killed innovation within their own company several times over.
