  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Future of Follow Focus Now- Optitron by OptiTek

Now Optitron is available do we need lenses to be true para focal opticaly or can perfect focus tracking be taken care of with in the control electronics ?

How do you work out what f stop you are on when you chuck a new lense on?

Could you possibly have an f1 to f22 with 3 marks between each engraved on the controller and depending on the lens it will always match up (obviously a f2.8 lens won't open up any further than f2.8)

That's exactly right Brendan.
We're actually took it one step further much like on our Nikon prolock so all stops will be pre marked and adjustable.

Could you please show us the mounting options for mounting the hand unit on a rig? (Preferably with a photo of it mounted.) Thanks

I should have the camera here any time now.
We'll take some pictures...

I think some lens education is in order. OptiTron will not fix back focus problems with the lens. It has no way of knowing the back focus error.
We could program the offset but it would be different for every lens and create more confusion. The best way is to have the lens and the camera properly serviced. You can verify one from the other but you need at least one (lens or camera) set to bench mark specs. I will probably go over either scenario in my upcoming videos. Stay tuned...

The wireless and some other related accs coming.
Can't wait to shoot and release the new video!!!

:thumbup1:Coming, soon enough Nils...

Just some thoughts Jacek:

If you look at how the Paralynx was packaged and sent out it came with a small host of wires and adaptors. This ensured that 90% or more people who received it could get it up and running within minutes. I know it sure made me happy.

With your wireless setup I think you need to consider how it will be wired to the various Epic setups. For me, knowing that I am running my wireless video off of D-tap I am immediately asking wether I will be able to split the D-tap to power the receiver for the Optitron. Solve this and offer your solution with the Optitron and you will have less headaches when it hits the market. IDK much about the Epic insides but maybe you can power the receiver off the mount? Surely you have thought about this stuff. Good luck. Waiting to see the results at NAB.

Just wanted to mention that we've been loving our Optitron that we've had the last few months.

We're even using it on a Steadicam with an extension cable pinned to the operator's vest. The longer cable uses more battery but the unit can also run on mains which is not a bad option for when the focus puller is sticking to the monitor.

Of course, the wireless update will be very helpful.

Thanks Jacek!

James

Good thoughts, except for powering from the Epic lens interface, that would involve a whole load of potential liabilities which I'm sure Jacek and Red will want to avoid after all the Birger Mount issues with the Red One.

Thank you Guys,
It looks like Abel and Sony will have demo units at their booths. Wireless demo video should be up next week.
We are also working with Fuji for Optitron Cabrio lens support- wirelessly...

If you are at NAB we have a system that show cases the potential of this tech.
Wireless, intergrated with a wireless HD monitor, hand held, studio, guerrilla run and gun configurations. For every production style.
Steadicam, certainly :)
come check it out at the Sony booth
Starting at roughly $1700
