  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The dreaded black and white startup screen.

It's gotta be a 5" touch issue then.

Yes, that's what's my experience as well.

It happens with the 5" touch monitor only. Seen it often. Annoying. The cable trick mostly worked. Now with the dragon update and some software builds ago it seems to be gone. However, I still see a white flash on the 5" that fortunately doesn't turn into the black and white screen any more.

I'm using the 5" touch. I see the black/white screen 50% of boot ups, and just a white screen on about 10% or so. I thought it was just normal until this thread. I did have some problems with it getting stuck on that screen and forcing me to reboot the camera after updating to the previous firmware, but I figured it was a bad install so I installed again and haven't had it get stuck there since.

I have the same issue ~50% of the time with my Scarlet. It's not the 5.0 touchscreen nor the cable. Same monitor worked on a Epic Dragon, switched the screen back and forth on a 1day shoot, b/w screen only happened on the Scarlet. I had to replace my 5.0 LCD once, the new one (also new cable) didn't resolve that problem. Firmware updates has also no effect. Glad to hear I'm not alone :)

I had never seen this before until I read the thread. Then it happened to me with a new 7" Touch. I unplugged and re-plugged the cable, and the problem disappeared.

I conclude that reading REDUSER is useful (it gave me the work-around), but also dangerous (because I never saw the problem until I read about it here). ;-)

Cycling through the overlay views always fixed it for me, using a button on the side-handle. Can take several cycles sometimes though, but would rather do that than unplugging and re-plugging the monitor.

Edit - The specific 'Key Action' is 'LCD (Brain): Cycle Mode'. Using that set to a button removes all the onscreen overlays and sort of refreshes the screen as it changes over, which I think gives the monitor a chance to properly receive the signal form the camera again. IIRC, and as others have mentioned, setting the monitors refresh rate to 30Hz can help prevent the signal getting corrupted too.

Happens everytime with 2 of our monitors and with any cable on our Epic-W...

Thanks for the Cycle mode tip!

I get this problem about 50% of the time as well with my 5" touch. I've had this problem over 3 bodies with the same screen. First with my Scarlet, then Epic MX/Dragon and now Epic-W. I wish there was a fix for it. Unplugging the cable has been standard operating procedure for a long time. I will try the cycle mode in the future.

I have that issue on one of the SI2K touch screens. It may be a defect in the monitor, a dry connection on the edge of the display screen itself. Unplugging the cable and re-plugging it may be enough to disturb the case and the dry connection inside and restore connection. Giving the SI2K monitor body a sharp single finger-hit on the edge makes it behave. I tried fixing it by putting a piece of suitcase foam in the casework between the rear and the screen to make it hold contact. It did work for a while until the foam conformed and lost pressure. I just live with it these days.

Never had this issue with my Scarlet but since the purchase of my Epic Dragon it seems to be happening on every boot. No word from anyone at RED as to why this is happening?

Thanks,
Tim

Some modern videoconferencing systems seem to suffer a similar conniption. The magic scaler box which feeds separate monitor screens is not ready to serve until after the monitor screens have already won the race and have done their start-up thing. A deselect and reselect of the displays seems to fix it. It might just be that the power feed to the RED LCD needs to have a delay built into it so that by the time the monitor comes on-line it sees a clean signal. Then again my imagination may be running riot.

Never seen this issue with two of my Reds... hmm...

Anyone figured this out yet? Happens 99% of the time on start up for me. Huge problem as the camera is usually in a dive housing with no access to cable. I need to turn the camera ON & OFF approx 7 times for it to work, than it usually shows a line down the centre of image on screen.

Do we know if its the definitely the monitor causing problems? Ive tried several cables. Epic dragon & 5 inch touch

Thanks

Believe or not, I solved it for me: it’s a brick problem. Everytime I use one special of my 6 bricks, the monitor does black/white or in last time only black. With the other bricks it’s not happening. I went to bebob (brick distributor in Munich) and we tested it there. We could cause this black/white everytime we wanted and refuse it everytime. It about the contacts in the V mount. You guys who has the problem, take a close look. Maybe your contacts are slitely damaged, what does not effect the camera, but the monitor. Also it seems to be that the charger charges not properly and can effect that screen too. I’m going to change all my bricks and charger.
Maybe also important for you: I have a RED Epic MX with the 5“ touch.

i am having this issue on my Red Scarlet MX and RED 5.0 touch. I think it has to be the touch display as the camera boots fine... also im powering using redvolts not V mount so it cant be that.

It's now 6 years since the first post in this thread, and still no solution?

I have had this fault with my Epic MX quite a few times. Usually a reboot fixes it.
But last night on a shoot, we rebooted the camera maybe 15 times and it still didn't go away.

[Edit: We also replaced the cable to the screen, which didn't fix it]

In the end, someone said they had seen someone else with this fault warm up their camera.
We heated the camera up for about 10 mins and then it worked again.

But what is the actual fault?
And why hasn't it been fixed yet?
