  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Dragon Sensor Dillema

Order after Jan 1 and you'll see a 15%+ price increase. Historically RED rewards early adopters with a lower upgrade price than new entrants. As I see it it tends to cost more to wait and buy new than to buy now and upgrade later.

So you can either pay less now and use your camera to make money for 7 months or pay more later and have no camera in the interim... Hmmmm tough choice. ;)

Those are really good points martin. My worry is not about that something will always be better. Thats the standard as you know. I upgraded 5 cameras in 4 years so there's no doubt about the Scarlet X being unique in its niche market.

My understanding is that early adopters usually are faced with certain compromises, constant updates and builds as a friend who owned the Red One attested. Most of what i shoot are full length features, just wrapping on a 5 month feature for a kids adventure film. It becomes more apparent for one that they must make long term decisions and wise choices when investing in a new system and workflow.

I think you are wrong they could have bought a camera , latest and greatest from red and sold it when the feature was done and probably get a "prime price" for it. Since there is not enough cameras to fill the supply secondhand cameras are sold for more than new once... that's the reality for the early adopters buying red, and it has been so since the start. I regret all the red cameras I did not buy, since I would have made money using them and definitely made money selling them...

When you gotta shoot.... you got to shoot

One thing i was thinking about is early adoption. I know a local here who started out on the original Red then upgraded to the MX which is superior.

According to announcements, the Dragon Sensor should be released this year

The Dilemma: If one buys the Scarlet X now, it has the MX Sensor....and its lovely btw so thats not the issue

But when the dragon is announced and im sure its gonna tear the block apart, one has to pay for that new upgrade so the question is how much $$$?

Then when the Scarlet X has that sensor built in down the road, one might regret not waiting for that

If you gotta shoot now by all means, just something that i was thinking about. What do you think?

Ok, here's what I think. If you are going to wonder what's round the corner every time you need to make a decision, that may lead to paralysis.

Over the past five years we have seen some incredible developments in terms of image capture and at a very fast pace. It is possible that the next five years will be even more incredible.

But.... to have an asset is better than none (even though I am still waiting for my Scarlet... ). The camera is ground breaking in every level, even with the MX sensor. It will raise the game in the work I do. And I imagine this will be the case for so many others like me who have placed their money where their mouths are.

Seriously...the Epic/scarlet x is not even fully featured yet....still missing, playback with audio, still missing "stills" functions, missing proper phantom power, missing dual hdmi/hdsdi proper output etc.... Quite a few things as you can see. Half the accessories are still in backorder while others are still in development (battery module, io modules, chargers etc...) and you are already thinking of Dragon sensor???? Lol.... ;-)
I would not even think about it right now and just get the scarlet x. Plus we all now that when RED says "release in 2012" that potentially means 2014....;-p

DRAGON is forthcoming. M-X is not. That should answer your question neatly! Also, price increase is incoming -- consider that in your calcualations.

Quite a few things, but many of them small/situation specific. Playback is coming along nicely though. Nothing has been stopping Jackson from shooting with EPIC and to think he didn't even have playback... ;-)

Lol....I agree but you can't compare big production company needs like Peter Jackson and most of us .... Heck most big production could get by with a just a camera that shoots nice picture as they have the means and budgets to supplement everything else (video village, real time transcoding, audio crew, and whatever gadgets is needed at any price to make the camera work the way they want it...)
