  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Book of Eli...

Pretty great considering we still don't know exactly what we are doing... :-)

Jim

I'd say you guys know more than you think you know Jim.
Congrats!

The footage from each camera was transferred to 10bit DPX and delivered to Laser Pacific for DI, which will happen next month. .
Is that not already suboptimal for RED, not working from RAW 12 bit but (pre)converting it to 10 bit?

I'm sure it was 10 bit LOG of some variety the guys know what they're doing. That's a valid if painful post path.

It was a standardized deliverable. The files were also 1920x1080, as some of the cameras in the test can't make images larger than that. The fact that there are different bit rates, and resolutions was noted in the documentation and in interviews.

A least common denominator deliverable for a film out ? huh I'd understand that if the deliverable was an SR. I've seen the difference though between a 4k red film out and a 2k one. I prefer the 4k.

Peter is mostly correct. The "Camera Assessment Series" was a collaboration between the Producer's Guild and the ASC to document the workflow and performance for seven digital film cameras and a 35mm film camera. The cameras that participated were: Red One, Panavision Genesis, Arri D-21, Thomson Viper, Sony F35 and F23, Panasonic 3700, and Arri 435 (film).

Which version of firmware with Red? Build 16 or build 17?

Jim I hope you had a chance to see the side by side tests Don Burgess shot with RED One and 35mm. They took it all the way through IP/IN release print and I thought it was a great test.
I know Ted saw it but am not sure if Farhat got the test to Lake Forest.

Using Red on Book of Eli VFX

I’ve had the opportunity to be a fly on the wall since day one, when 15 people sat around a table at Oakley and Jim said “Okay, let’s define the best camera that can be built and I’ll build it”. It’s a great feeling to actually hold this thing in my hands now and most of all, use it as the principal camera for all the Visual Effects on The Book Of Eli. Albert and Allen Hughes are directing. Albert is actually quite familiar with the camera and has done extensive testing specifically for Eli. He really owns the look and technology of the film and is savy at putting the two together.

Add to that a talented and cool DP like Don Burgess and a world-class camera department, led by Donal Stienberg and Jeroen Hendriks.

Jim and the Red team are so supportive as always. By the way, in regards to some of the posts asking if Red “gave” us cameras…. I have to say that we were proud to have paid for our 5 full packages. Red’s friendship and support stretches back to when I field-tested the early cameras on Wanted.

The image quality is stunning and I’m looking forward to using these as our plate elements. The RED system is perfectly suited for our huge VFX task on this show. I’m sure you’ll be hearing from the Directors and Don Burgess soon.
