  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Book of Eli...

Just watched this movie. Nice look! Definitely see the pin sharpness and highlight retention ability of the Red shining through (in the shots without sky replacement).

And great story too!

awesome. awesome. did i mention awesome.

I watched this for the first time last night. While the look was heavily processed, it didn't have that plastic look that seems so common now. It looked very gritty and a little retro in a good way. Would love to have seen this done with a DSLR lol.
What was amazing to me, watching the bonus features, was how close the film looked to incredible concept art and story boards. Wow

The look is a very like Marmite, you either love it or hate it, I loved it, thought it was pushing the boundaries outside the norm, I like that.

That makes sense then why I can't ever recall seeing "Shot on Arri" or something similar. I did wonder about that.

I believe all you will see is the Arri logo, whenever filmmakers choose to use it. That's what I remember seeing on the LOTR end credits in the jumble of other logos they had.

I didn't want to comment on the film when I first saw it at the theatre, but now that months have gone by and I'm more calm, let me just say; one of the worst films Mr. Washington has even been in, and the look (grade) is absolutely atrocious. One of the worst grading decisions in modern film history. Just a real shame this film is supposed to be a showcase for RED cameras.

The look of this film is definitely one that people absolutely love or completly hate. Not much middle ground.

I have to agree, what a load of rubbish this film is, how they got Denzel W and Gary Oldman to take part in this film is a mystery to me.
Even awful films can be made on RED. Sadly as amazing as the camera is, it cannot improve a dreadful script and leaden performances.

I saw Book of Eli for the first time last night and really enjoyed it. The end credits dont list Red, but rather say Cameras provided by Panavision and Film stock by Kodak.

Was this shot on Red?

I enjoyed the first part of the film quite a bit, but then I had the feeling I was watching a film written by a church group or religious organization.

Somewhere along the line people forgot to put some fun in their post-apocalyptic movies, man! How the heck are we supposed to enjoy re-watches of these types of movies?
Especially 'the road' which was lovely but just incredibly depressing and grim all the way through.

The post apocalyptic world just isn't that funny. ;)

I can see what you're talking about, but I don't agree at all. A film like The Road isn't the norm. It is an exception of the rule and a absolutely beautiful exception at that. I absolutely adored that film, and the book even more.
Havn't seen the Book of Eli yet though. The trailer did absolutely not look like a serious and/or depressing film but more of a fun flick, like the ones you asked for. I thought that the dialogue and the dance/fight coreography hinted at a much less serious note.

My guess is they rented the "Panavized RED's"

As Aaron said, the Red cameras were provided by Panavision (same deal with the new Pirates). The Kodak stock is actually in reference to the distribution prints...a lot of time what you see listed for stock in credits is actually for distribution not acquisition.
