  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Book of Eli...

Just saw the movie last night, here in Montreal's AMC 22 on a Christie Digital. Following RED for a while now, was thriled seeing the visual style and quality of "Eli". I enjoyed the film, quite a mood set by the grading, stark visuals. It seems that this was the year of RED, District 9, Knowing. I knew going into the theatre with my friends that these films were shot on RED. I look for the RED-Iris logo in the credits, my friends think I'm nuts. : ) Yes, they do know my passions for film and that I'm waiting for Scarlet.

CONGRATS JIM and Team! This is quite exciting stuff!!!

Though Burgess says he liked the experience, he’d hardly call himself a RED convert. “It’s not a process cinematographers are in love with,” he says. “I’d still rather shoot everything anamorphic and run it through the lab. But that’s the world we live in now.”
And now RED has announced Anamorphics?

Just saw it tonight. I liked the look. Although I thought the sky replacements looked a bit over processed. I couldn't get the Lion's gate logo out of my head the entire movie, I kept expecting it to fade in behind Eli's head.

I thought the movie looked absolutely awesome, Don Burgess did an amazing job.

terrific, amazing results on the big screen... That alone would have kept me wake. That only kept me wake, actually :-)

The story of the movie was kinda cheesy .... i liked the footage and the grading though ...

The film looked absolutely amazing....

....but the story and acting sucked ballz...what a stupid twist at the end.

Just saw it on the main stage at Mann's chinese theatre and it looked absolutely stunning. If I was Jim then I'd be mad about the fact that it said "Shot on Panavision cameras and lenses" in the credits. No RED logo what-so-ever. The only RED related in the credits was the "RED technician" - Jeroen Hendriks, who's also worked on a lot of other RED features.

I viewed the Book of Eli Blu-ray today, well most of it anyways, and really liked the look. Oddly enough the ending credits claim the movie was "Filmed with Panavision cameras and lenses". No "Shot on RED" logo in the credits either.

They were shot on Panavised RED One's. No idea why they didn't find it appropriate to credit RED as well as Panavision. Guess there was some oddball reason. :sosp:

Yeah... well, RED was plenty visible in the extra materials, anyway :)

Because when cameras are supplied by Panavision the credit: "Cameras and Lenses Provided by Panavision" is applied.

Same if they had used Panavised F900's...

The Panavision credit is a basic part of every Panavision rental contract. There have been movies shot on Arris with the Panavision credit in the title, when the Arris were rented from them.

As for not crediting Red, well, that's a producers/distributor decision. If they have no legal requirement to do so, it's at their discretion.

That makes sense then why I can't ever recall seeing "Shot on Arri" or something similar. I did wonder about that.

I'm definitely not Jim, but everything I've read about Book of Eli (including IMDB) lists the only negative format as RED 4K. Jim did mention this, but I haven't read it elsewhere:

I think there were one or two high-speed (slow-mo) takes on film.

Jim

As was mentioned in the posts above, Panavision is credited because they actually supplied "Panavised" RED ONE cameras and Panavision lenses. If the equipment was rented from Panavision it would read "Camera and Lenses provided by Panavision" regardless of the camera (Arri film, Arri D21, Sony F900, RED ONE). There was a legal obligation to credit Panavision in the credits and (apparently) no obligation to credit RED.
