How is it?

Some people say it's a strain for the eyes.

Some people say it flickers...

Some people say it's impossible to get it focused to a normal eye!!!

Some people say the gamma, contrast and color rendition is totally off...

So...

Is the BOMB, not the BOMB it set out to become?

Should I buy one?

Should RED bring an update to the BOMB?

Is it worth over 3000 dollars?

...will my mother approve if I get one?

Please, users and red-people, share your insights!

:)

Thank you,
Jon M.

I'll just say, I spent the entire afternoon filming in generally overcast conditions and pretty much once every five minutes, I said to myself, "Really wish I had an EVF right now."

Some people say it's a strain for the eyes.
Really?? do they know you can focus it to site any eye..

Some people say it flickers...
I think thats a fault with a few, I have 3... there is no flicker.

Some people say it's impossible to get it focused to a normal eye!!!
See above..

Some people say the gamma, contrast and color rendition is totally off...
Color is fine, the problem is the blacks are not black... Annoys us all. and hopefully it will be fixed soon.

Should I buy one?
Up to you, it's self powered by the camera and it's pin sharp...

Should RED bring an update to the BOMB?
Get those blacks right and I'm happy!

Is it worth over 3000 dollars?
Not with those blacks the way they are.... $2200.. :)

...will my mother approve if I get one?
O my...

And some people say it's the same as the Alexa EVF. (Which is $5900.)

The Bomb is not perfect but it is impressive for it's size and cost. I preferred the slightly higher magnification of the original EVF but not at the expense of the extra weight or sharpness.
I can see focus better on the Bomb clean than my ACs can on the 5.6" monitor with the focus assist on. It's way sharper than the Alexa EVF. When it first starts up it does have a tendency to go a little magenta but this settles down after a min or two. I also find that if I adjust the brightness for a particular scene I get a more representative image, higher brightness for high key scenes and darker for lower key scenes. The blacks are not as good as standalone monitor but that also has the advantage of allowing you to see into the shadows better when you're framing. Use the histogram/meters/zebras for exposure.

Hands down the best EVF on the market. Some people who are used to ENG style viewfinders find it hard to use because you have to have your eye up to it, but if you are used to film cameras, then it's normal feeling.

I have to send mine in, I can get it to be sharp for the life of me. If I hold my head perfectly still It will be semi-clear, but any adjustment of my head and it's all over! The focus wheel just doesn't get it focused enough for me, and I have 20/20

really hoping Red address the issues with the Bomb as I'd like to purchase one but can't justify having one that doesn't perform 100%

Justin,

Even after adjusting the diopter on the bomb?

Yes, to all of the above...
My insight, it does it all, flicker, hard to focus, and all that. but I think red will fix it and when they do backorder will be even longer. So yes buy one and see what happens. It's will work fine or it will be replaced thats how I see it..

I think it is OK but a loupe on the LCD is far better.

Jason Wingrove tweeted a mockup up the DP4 loupe and the RED touch screen a while back. I actually suggested this to SmallHD after that and they said it was something to consider. Maybe if a bunch of people asked for it they or someone else would make one. Would def need to flip up to be practical.
