  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The affordable Computer for 2009?

Vegas 9 will let you edit 4k RedCode 36 16:9 footage at 1k resolution on a Quad Q6600 at 3.15Ghz with 4GB of DDR2 RAM. It is also NATIVE editing... shoot, copy your footage over to yhr drives and you are ready to drag and drop on the timeline with full control over the debayer like you would on RedAlert.

But for under $1,000 you can get a new LGA 1366 socket Motherboard like the ASUS P6T (link) which will let you overclock an Intel i7 920 )link) with a good air cooler to 3.8GHz with your eyes closed. A pair of these sets of G.Skill DDR3 1600Mhz RAM (link) with low timings and you have a blazing fast rig, couple that with Vegas and you'll be editing quite comfortably. I am sure you can Overclock the ram a bit more with spec voltage.

Overclocking is, if you didn't know, the ability to set your hardware to run faster by setting it's speed a bit higher on the motherboard's BIOS (press Delete on boot up). The i7 920 and the RAM will run faster without having to up the voltage at all, it is just a matter of testing it and finding their limits... nothing will break if you don't mess with the voltage... or you could be adventurous... :)

Either way just make sure your case has lots of air flow and get one of these Megahalems CPU cooler (link) for your CPU with a good 120mm fan strapped onto it and you'll be set.

The MoBo will also let you run a pair of 7200rpm drives like the Seagate/Western Digital 1TB's or the 2TB's in RAID0 for your footage drive which should be plenty to kick around small projects. Just get your OS and software installed on a third single 7200rpm drive for a better performance.

Pretty reliable, I'm using a Black Magic Extreme and a LSI SAS RAID Card & LTo 4 Quantum.
Amazing!!!
Alex, could you tell us whith how many drives you could get a real time 4.2.2 1080P 24 or 25i/s 10 bit or 8bit output signal from the Black Magic Extreme?Whith which Raid and which controler?(On a raid0 of 6x500Gb 7200t sataII drives on intel ICHR10 controler,i get 500mb/s).
I am loocking for a solution to record on an Hdcam deck.

I've got to add one more 500GB, Ive only got 5 So far. I want a RAID 0 on the OS drive on SSD's, and a SSD Work Area big enough to capture an entire tape of HDCAM(at least until the bigger ones get cheaper), SSD's are like small investments because they have a much longer lifespan.

What is your setup to record to an HDCAM deck not from?
Yes SSD are the way to go for os drives,128gb are the minimum for os,program and aja suite for example.2x64gb SSD in raid0 must be fast.
Are you using the SAS LSI controler for your raid array?

I'd do a RAID-1 for your OS... just my personal opinion. And especially with good SSD drives which are fast enough anyway.

BTW, that MoBo will let you run at least two RAID-0's possibly three.
