Vegas 9 will let you edit 4k RedCode 36 16:9 footage at 1k resolution on a Quad Q6600 at 3.15Ghz with 4GB of DDR2 RAM. It is also NATIVE editing... shoot, copy your footage over to yhr drives and you are ready to drag and drop on the timeline with full control over the debayer like you would on RedAlert.
But for under $1,000 you can get a new LGA 1366 socket Motherboard like the ASUS P6T (link) which will let you overclock an Intel i7 920 )link) with a good air cooler to 3.8GHz with your eyes closed. A pair of these sets of G.Skill DDR3 1600Mhz RAM (link) with low timings and you have a blazing fast rig, couple that with Vegas and you'll be editing quite comfortably. I am sure you can Overclock the ram a bit more with spec voltage.
Overclocking is, if you didn't know, the ability to set your hardware to run faster by setting it's speed a bit higher on the motherboard's BIOS (press Delete on boot up). The i7 920 and the RAM will run faster without having to up the voltage at all, it is just a matter of testing it and finding their limits... nothing will break if you don't mess with the voltage... or you could be adventurous...
Either way just make sure your case has lots of air flow and get one of these Megahalems CPU cooler (link) for your CPU with a good 120mm fan strapped onto it and you'll be set.
The MoBo will also let you run a pair of 7200rpm drives like the Seagate/Western Digital 1TB's or the 2TB's in RAID0 for your footage drive which should be plenty to kick around small projects. Just get your OS and software installed on a third single 7200rpm drive for a better performance.
