  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

hope everyone had a happy holiday. The RED team left this under my tree. It really is the camera of the future. I had my hands on it at NAB, but really that was not enough to grasp the innovations which await us, especially once the OMODs start shipping.

What is always exciting about buying RED cameras is not just what it can do right now, but also what it will be able to do a year or more from now. Eagerly awaiting the 8K adventure!

Thank you, RED team. It is going to be a fun and inspiring 2016.

I think things are going to me moving fairly fast and furious in the new year, Jon. I was certainly pleasantly surprised when my number was called.... hope all is going well in RiNO-land.

Had a friend ask if I was excited to get my camera when I showed it to him. Had to dampen his expectations by telling him that I had been shooting with 6k already so even though the Weapon has some new features, it's pretty much business as usual. But when it becomes 8k, yes... I will be very enthusiastic!

Still, it's going to be fun re-equipping this form factor.

Elsie, it's like every RED camera that ever was...it's early in what this camera can do. Right out of the gate, I'm very much liking the pro res, the quietness of the cooling system, easier access to throughput, cable-less LCD, better compression ratios, fast blackshade times (so far clocked 7:30 to blackshade for 1/1 time-lapse and under 3:50 for 120 fps - pretty speedy....), lighter body, and better lowlight performance.

This is the baseline stuff - RED always cranks it up once they get through the upgrades and get these machines in more hands. Once the OMODs start hitting the streets, it will definitely be another game-changer. Then 8K. And whatever other unforeseen firmware magic is unleashed - there are ALWAYS happy surprises, I don't expect this time to be different.

Only the 2nd inning of the game. I'm just happy mine was delivered in the 2nd inning. Time to put away the tree and get back to work....
 
Congradulations. I just got email to proceed with upgrades. It must feel great to have it in your hands.

It certainly is, Marcus!.... Today will be my first day to get out and shoot substantially - was it so wrong of me to want all of the family and house guests to leave, so that I could find some time alone to play with my new cameras? :smiley:

In the things that concern me department - right out of the gate -

the cable less LCD has its upside - but the downside is that it limits where you can mount it on the camera. The new cooling system is super quiet - I ran through an hour+ of battery without the fans ever revving up to cool the camera, which was great. It does take up a lot of real estate, however. There aren't many mounting points available, and even a top plate won't add a lot of room.

The WC top mount system adds a lot of potential for rod mounting, which I think will be the way to go.

Now would be a great time for RED to listen to my endless pleas for a T-bar style handle - this camera is so light, it would work well - just take the Universal Handle already in the store - I like the design with the flat top with mount points and the knurled grip - http://www.red.com/store/products/dsmc2-universal-handle - and make a horizontal "T" version. With its lower profile, it would also be more out of the way of the front-mounted LCD. If it had a side mount point on each end, it would add some flexibility for lightweight configurations.

This could take a bit of weight off and open up the two existing 1/4-20 mount points on the rear of the camera, so that you can actually use them to mount something to the body - or to use a small plate. I have the tiny WC Easy plate, which would give me an additional 4-6 useable mount points, and would love to be able to screw that in. Right now, even though it is possible to mount the small plate, anything that I actually attach to it would currently conflict with the standard Weapon handle.

Fully rigging this camera is going to be fairly easy - get a fresh top plate and use all of my existing WC plates, rods, and rigging. It is the lighter weight configurations which might require a little creativity, at the moment.
 
thanks for the first impressions and rigging recommendations, please keep us posted for those of us still awaiting allocation with any further impressions? we appreciate the information immensely, esp before buying accessories as we all await our shipments (late next month for us on the trailing end of CF)
