  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Tethered Recording Sneak Peak @ IBC ( and Photokina )

It would be so useful to use this for offloading mags during idle time in studio. Then there'd be no frame rate restrictions.

THIS.

There was a product in development many years ago - and it was basically an uncompressed recorder - and when you cut (stopped rolling) it would start transferring the data over ethernet - then when you started rolling again - it would pause the offload. I thought it was a great concept - they ran out of money and the product never shipped - but ...

I'd LOVE this exact functionality with Dragon and R3Ds over Gig-E.

Think of it this way - in a 12 hour period - the camera only rolls 2-3 hours. That's a LOT of time to offload in the background.

Yeah, my first preference would be for idle-offload. Then I can pull the last take and review it immediately. But just being able to pull a still during setup will be really helpful for doing slap comps etc to do sanity checks on camera position etc.

Love the idea of pushing out a R3D still frame with metadata over GigE and RedLink pre roll per manual prompt, and automatically generate one of the first frame immediately post-roll. This still and metadata could be the starting point for tracking the created media asset, including automatic uploading to a cloud based reference database. (A "sample" frame not also present in a recorded media asset could be tagged with the subsequent clip ID as a search aid.)

Tethered recording is a welcome addition to the RED ecosystem - with other potentially valuable aspects to be explored. I really hope the directory info in any file out of any port at any time has robust metadata that will make collating/conforming rock solid and automatic. If dumping R3Ds in chunks between takes can be done with full reliability that once completed, the clips will be intact and identical to clips written out in one contiguous pass, that's awesome.

Cheers - #19

I would love to see less compression recording when using faster drives. If I had a raid 5 or SNS EVO, something very capable and say a faster ethernet cord that would be a cool feature! PS can we get this to work in Avid and other apps too please?

So if it this guy maxes out at 6K/24FPS/10:1 for video (looks to be about 71 MB/sec as per RED's cinematography tools), does that mean we could pull 4K/96FPS/17:1 from our Dragons (looks like 72 MB/sec)?

BUT WHEN. DON'T JUST WET OUR WHISTLE AND DISAPPEAR LIKE A FART IN THE WIND...... So to speak haha.
Please give us a update........ unless where on a need to know basis and at this point we don't need to know :)

Dragons (and others) are Gig-E only; no cost effective upgrade in sight.

They could make a 10GbE module for the back. That's a highspeed data port as proven by the fact that you can use the broadcast module to stream uncompressed RAW sensor data and debayer in the module to 4k and you can record RAW with the rear REDMAG reader.

Idle time offload of mags over GigE would be a killer feature for studio use. 10GbE, even better.

So you run Cat6 to the camera and while its not rolling it offloads to a folder or .DMG on your mac. Then when the mag is full you can connect it to the reader like usual to verify the copy.

No more waiting around at the end of the day to copy and verify everything.

Oh yes! Lets hear it for a +10 Adapter Module!

Any news on a 10-Gigabit Ethernet port? For Weapon or EPIC. This is really needed to use the full potential of this feature.

Not really. You are limited in frame rates / REDcode to the speed of Gigabit pipe and most better spinning hard drives can surpass that now.

Hi Jarred,

Any plans for a 10-Gigabit Ethernet port for the Weapon to release the full/maximum potential of this really great feature?

it wold be interested if this could be the Proxy footage for post and be able to be transferred via the interweb to a post facility...

ProRes to a secure server with Timecode/MetaData attached. Might be useful
