  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Tethered Recording Sneak Peak @ IBC ( and Photokina )

So what's the best way of extending the 9ft cable? Can it go through a switch? I'm thinking the main benefit is recording remotely from the camera position - helicopters , underwater etc.

Is it a sign of RED coming closer to studio and multi cam world? I believe this tether would extend to build sophisticated multi camera systems. This is so great and opens tons of interesting opportunities!

The 4K broadcast module that uses 4 SDI cables is better suited to most live multi-cam EFP applications. The Gig-E R3D feed would presumably require a RR-X for on the fly decode and I'd expect a certain amount of latency that could be problematic.

FWIW, my first thoughts were about immediate data redundancy and 30 minute + rolls. Interviews/talking heads with static backgrounds seem particularly well suited to this topology as even 15:1 compression should do fine with only the pixels representing the subject changing/moving.

@ Red,

If space opens up for a new tethering port (maybe on a new high-frame rate camera...), the following could be an interesting proposition (if not already in the lab):

Intel : MXC Fibre optic connector : Bandwidth = 1.6 TB / second
http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/research/intel-labs-silicon-photonics-mxc-connector.html

Interestingly - interconnects using ARM (eg CCN-508) are also aiming at similar speeds :
http://www.theregister.co.uk/Print/...n_5xx_on_chip_interconnect_microarchitecture/

As even TB3 ( 40Gb / sec) would throttle the Rocket-x .... could this be another device to benefit for high speed interconnecting when the RRX is an external enclosure?

hmmm i´ll be on photokina on saturday... a friend of mine is on your runway show she said that there will be online shows from tue-fr? but the photokina goes from tues-sunday :-)
hopefuly there will be shows on sat and sun too :-)

best janosch

Whoa! Pretty sweet!

Are there going to be any APIs in the SDK to build custom apps that utilize the feature?

Would it be possible, for example, to go directly to networked storage? Say... go from camera to ethernet to iscsi connected network storage (i.e. the SAN)?... how about multi camera support if the network is fast enough (i.e. using vlans)?

Blair , R3D compression does not use or consider subject movement at all. It's strictly a frame by frame compression , each frame is compressed with no information from previous frames.
It's J2K , basically.

This is something very cool that we have been working on forever.. and it is finally almost ready.

Come see it working in our booth at both IBC and Photokina.

Tethered recording of stills or motion via single cable ( Gig-E ) to laptop / external drive.

Not sure how I missed this one...

F A N T A S T I C!!

Now I fill I am brought back to the last days of Still Photography... ;)

Apologies if this was answered, but will this be an option for a Scarlet MX as well, or only for Epics?

thx

Thanks Les, my error. In J2K based compression the key variable is the amount of high frequency detail. In an interview setting with a simple backdrop or OOF (out of focus) background due to limited DOF then my note stands - even 15:1 RedCode should be yield a nice clean image. Moreover, since higher ratios in J2K based compression schemes primarily subtly soften things like facial wrinkles and blemishes it's probably a win-win in a lot of cases ;-)

Awesome- game change....

It would be so useful to use this for offloading mags during idle time in studio. Then there'd be no frame rate restrictions.
