A link to these "tests" just turned up in my email. As they seem to do in ever increasing droves. But with Scarlet in the title and a new Sony F5 and a BMCC it got the better of me and I watched...

It's obviously a good idea to test, learn, experiment... But these days it really strikes me that no small amount of tests are becoming less about sharing and being better informed so as to be able to meet, exceed or trouble shoot creative objectives, and instead more and more synonymous with building your profile and getting traffic and hits. Add reviewing gear into the mix, and it's become it's own industry. That's fine. And the skilled people who do it well provide a very valuable service. Some of the tests shared here and other places are just phenomenal and so valuable. But that's just the point...

Videos like these really serve as reminders that "tests, vs's, comparisons, shootouts or whatever you want to call them, actually take a lot of skill, forethought and considerable effort if you want to provide an informed, accurate and valuable response. And if none of that matters, cool, but please just call it what it is, mucking around with some cool cameras for a few hours. I get it. That's fun. And useful I'm sure. But does everything really require being launched into the blogosphere these days? Because I'll admit, as an owner operator it's hard watching a camera whose image potential you know intimately, being under exposed then over exposed whilst having it's image compared to other cameras - all the while knowing that just as it was emailed to your doorstep a few minutes ago, it has also been sent to many thousands upon thousands of others... it just feels a bit negligent really. And at the least it's bloody annoying. I'm just glad most producers I know never bother watching camera tests. Though people still seem to talk about the Zacuto shootout and the GH2 :)

I want to be clear, I don't have anything against the reviewers, they're probably all lovely really talented guys and they can do and think whatever they wish. But that freedom of expression swings both ways. And I really wish people would strive to deliver quality results or otherwise not pertain to having found any "results" at all. Otherwise what may only be some accidental misinformation, can become damaging misinformation that could cost business and jobs for others.

On a lighter note. I read the best review I have ever read of a product on B&H the other day... 5 stars given. Went something along the lines of... Well I gotta say, this is probably the most screwiest of screws that I've ever had the pleasure of screwing with...

Be well all

Ha :) At least you didn't follow up by wasting twenty minutes writing about it :) I actually just came back on line to close the thread, as I realised I will just be creating more traffic to something that shouldn't have it and wasting other peoples time. Shouldn't post when it gets this late over here.

Hey... can I even pull a thread once I've made one? I don't think I can.

Mods?

And all the conclusion I can make is : It doesn't make sens to have a 10000 / 20000 / 30000 USD camera to put the footages on vimeo/youtube 90% of time.

All these cameras are amazing, but I still find the vimeo/youtube compression absolutely ugly.

It is exactly when I look to 4,5K footage in 1/8 and 1/4 and 1/2 playing quality on my computer.

The difference is huge.

Still waiting for a TRUE 2K/4K high quality video provider on this planet.

But for now, it is exactly like to have a ferrari on a mini golf court.

Have an amazing 4:4:4 camera and finish with an ugly 4:2:0 on vimeo.

Sounds just absurd...

The minute those guys rolled up, clearly had limited experience with the 3 cameras, and starting making sweeping statements about all of them after incredibly simple and mundane tests, I knew this goose was cooked...

They looked like they were shopping at K-Mart. Not reviewing world class cinema cameras.

Wtf with the exposure on the Scarlet vision with guy against the boxes....terrible.

P.S. I really liked how the Lighting director/gaffer demo-ed the F5 on the shoulder & discussing AB battery packs.

Yeah, I couldn't even finish watching. Its becoming more like politics these days... these guys are admittedly bias towards the F5 because they always work with an F3. That seems like a silly candidate for doing unbiased tests, no? They should have called this video, "Why my F5 is the best". As soon as I saw the first comparison I knew this was not going to be informative. The only thing one can learn from that test is that underexposed images will always look like shit next to properly exposed images regardless of which camera you use.

Their shameless proclamations are what make me shake my head. Their opinions may work on the uninformed, but to true professionals they come across as pretty amateur. They may not know it, but they are not doing themselves any favors...at least with the higher end of the market, that demands a much higher level of technique and judgement, across the board...

I don't know about everyone else but I can tell a huge difference in 5k 4k images exported to 1080 for vimeo after editing then 1080 5d clips exported 1080 for Vimeo. The difference is night and day to me at least...

Yeah, same here. Our old Canon DSLR stuff looks like flip cam to me now on Vimeo now.

I do not compare 4K footage raw and HD H264 source.

Of course the down conversion from 4K to HD is always better than HD H264 to HD H264 vimeo compressed :D

I compare 4K raw footages and the HD vimeo compressed version.

It would be nice to have even only half of the bluray HD quality H264 but online.

This is a ridiculous "test." Why is the Lighting Tech telling the guys how to rig a camera for the shoulder? So confused... Why do they need a lighting tech for this "test." I wouldn't even consider this stuff lit.

Confused with too many buttons? WTF?! It's a freaking touch screen that is very intuitive and easy. On the side handle you push the wrong button, push it again to turn it off, simple shit.

And why the hell is the exposure varied from camera to camera? This is one of the dumbest "tests" I have ever seen! Never thought I could get so angry over a test and I don't even own a camera.

Wow, whoever hires that guy as a DP must have very low expectations and no budget. I've never seen a cam op dress like that. Anyways, this is a ridiculous "test?" HAHA. i was thinking the exact same thing. basically if you have half a brain and 5 mins to test the camera prior to operating you can figure out the like 10 buttons that are on the camera.

major fail on the video. and camera test not so much as a comparison, and a very piss poor one at that. how can you even claim the winner as sony if they couldnt even show footage from it other than screen shots? smh

LOL @ Matt

Your not equating correct exposure with fashion sense are you ......However after viewing the results I'm inclined to agree. I better get a stylist.

It's like having Mister Rogers as your DP, he's a nice guy and looks intelligent, but that doesn't mean he's skilled...

I think for our next lens test we should all wear tuxedos and have fake mustaches. Pretty DPs make the prettiest images.

hahaha done. It screams professional.

"our favorite camera was the sony F5, even though we have no idea how to view the video clips its such an easy camera to use. Were going to run a test and only show stills for one of the cameras and raw ungraded footage for the others. We think stills are pretty cool looking"
