  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

TERADEK Cube/Bundle - Group Buy!

I have a few questions that maybe have been answered already. I tried contacting teradek a few times with no luck. Can you listen to the video signal on more than one device ? What would be the limit and does that increase the latency ?

Yes, with a router/switch/server that can handle networking infrastructure multiple devices can receive the video: http://vimeo.com/14644326

I believe I heard that more than two devices receiving a stream would max out the capability of a the Cube encoder working alone (Ad Hoc network mode).

Don't know what the increase in latency would be, but hopefully once I've gotten 23 iPads to receive the stream, a la Light Iron's LiVEPLAY system, I can let you know ;)

Okay, I too am a little surprised that nobody has chimed in with a review except for 1 person! Anyone have more comments on this or are we missing another thread with real user reviews?

My main question is this: I'm not as interested in using this as a recordable signal, but I would absolutely love to have this unit on our RED (or EX3 for that matter) and send a wireless signal to an iPad for the client to view. In other words, we want this for run & gun type work...no laptop to create a network, no router, etc. Just plug in and see it wirelessly on a single iPad.

Given this, is the Cube120 still the product we should be looking at? If so, in the config I just mentioned, would it be limited to streaming to only 1 device without a computer in the mix?

Thanks a lot.

Kevin

I got one on the group buy but decided to return it -- 20% restocking fee -- gulp!

Seemed like a nice little box but in a somewhat alpha software state. I happened to run into some simple things that made getting it up and running more difficult than it should have been. In Teradek's defense, my Red One was out on a rental, so I started testing the Teradek using the HD-SDI out from my old Canon XL-H1 camera. Turns out the box wasn't compatible with that signal but is supposed to be fine with the Red HD-SDI. But I believe some of these boxes are out in production situations, so take my experience as the single data point that it is.

Also, at the time that I had the box, iPad live viewing of the signal was still delayed by about 10 seconds. Not sure if they've got a work-around for that yet. I know the problem wasn't with Teradek but rather with Apple's iPad video stack wanting to buffer the stream before beginning to display. Until that delay is solved, I would think the use you described above wouldn't be satisfactory. I also wonder whether live viewing alone would be worth it. Seems like once you have that you'd really want to be able to review takes as well, which would definitely require a laptop server somewhere in the loop.

I've seen demos of Tony Cioni's Live Play system, which looks fantastic and is what led me to Teradek in the first place. I'll probably end up there again, although if Red makes an Epic module that emits h.264 over wifi I'll go that route instead.

Apparently they just released an update that makes the ipad streaming much better (well at least faster) :

From their twitter account :
"Not perfect, but so much better. Cube streams to 3 iPads with < 1/4sec delay. Works with Proxy recording too!"

Haven't tried it (I don't have a Cube), so I can't confirm how well it works...
