  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Tentacle Sync

I have used Tentacle for several projects, bought 3 devices and used them with scarlet-w ,raven and sony A7R II and different sound recorders.
Works really well, costumers support are great and I will really recommend their products.

Their test showed yes it is solid, but only if you don't reboot.

Well, evidently they have fixed that since they tested it because mine holds over reboots every single time. I will say that I've had issues in the past with SoundDevices recorders not holding timecode when turned off.

What kind of field recorders are you guys using with the Tentacle ?

Need to get a new one that either has TC that can be synced to the TS, or is multi-track so that we can record a dedicated TC track via the TS (it is important here that that TS TC track can be muted, so that it does not pollute the live monitoring).

Tried the cheapo H4N and found the sound quality sub par...

What are you guys using ?

I already have SD Mixer & Pre-Amp so I just need a field recorder...

Oh, that is very good news then? Can you point anywhere else to confirmation of this? As I've been following all the firmware update notes for the Zoom F8 (as keen indeed to get one myself) and online discussions of them, and can't see anywhere news about that.

Zoom F8 is the cheapest option new with TC. And an all round bargain featured recorder.

Otherwise if you just need a multi track recorder, get one of Tascam DR60D mk2 (about US$150ish or less on sale, and ***HUGELY**** better than an H4n) or DR70D (sub $200 on sale) or DR680 (I got a mk1 secondhand with a Satchler mixing bag all for under US$300 that I now use: http://ironfilm.co.nz/sound/ )

Although, if you have the cash, of course go for a Sound Devices 633 instead! :)

David,

do you happen to know whether you can mute recording tracks individually on the DR60D / DR70D / DR680 when monitoring ?

(we need this when using the audio TC signal form the TS)

Thanks.

On my last project we used a Tascam 701D and it has TC.Worked really well.Fastened it to the side og my Scarlet-W which have a ET weapon mini side plate.Gave the scarlet-w a sound track from the recorder and TC synced both with tentacles sync together with my raven camera.

how did u feed TC to the 701D ? did u have to get a special cable from TS or can u use one off the shelf ?

Mike - I was looking into the same thing for my DR70D but couldn't find any way to do it. I believe Tentacle has instructions on their site on how to route tracks to headphone monitoring to avoid hearing the TC but only for some of the smaller Zoom recorders.
I've since upgraded to the Zoom F8 and I'm absolutely loving it. Running your mix on an iPad Pro 12.9" via Bluetooth is insanely handy when you're a one-man band. I jam my Tentacles to the Zoom at the start of the day and leave them on the cameras for the remainder.

I have seen some TC irregularities when I reboot but I might be due for a firmware upgrade.
