  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Tentacle Sync

If I understand the question, we are asking about the TC on the audio recorder. If, for example, you are recording sound to an H4n with Tentacle attached, does RCX read the TC from the TC (audio) track of the H4n?

Thanks, Bob - in the case of R3Ds, do you use their software just to turn the (H4n) audio into a "proper" TC-based audio track and THEN treat it as normal in RCX or FCPX or PP, etc to synch the audio and the video via TC?

Thanks and, sorry to keep bugging you, but...

do I need two Tentacles to synch something like and H4n and my Dragon (a box on each)? Or, could I jam synch the Dragon TC with the Tentacle box (as master) and then hook the Tentacle up to the H4n and start shooting?

Yup. You can just use one. Like you said, jam the dragon and then plug it into the zoom.

If this is correct then Ive been doing double work here.

Using an Tascam 8-channel WAV files I can use the sync n link in RCX?
 
Just wanted to chime in on this thread as I bought tentacle sync boxes and they are awesome. Very small, great price, work with R3Ds. I have yet to try multi-cam R3D synching using their included Tentacle Sync studio app, which can export an XML timeline to Premiere or FCP. Once I do, I will post about it.

For anyone unclear at first glance like I was, about whether it generates "real" timecode, it indeed does. It can use regular time code, and also audio LTC timecode for devices that don't have any timecode implementation to them.

Also, I had some small interactions with their customer service and they were wonderful to deal with.

Yeah but it is crap TC, you'd never jam it in the morning then trust it will keep accurate TC for the rest of an entire shoot day. Only an Alexa has a quality enough TC you could trust that. Thus you attach a timecode box to your RED to keep it accurate.

Plus you of course need a recorder that can do TC as well.... cheapest by far option new is the Zoom F8. It is quite revolutionary! But it has a few issues too (such as it will lose TC if you reboot).

What about Weapon, how's the timecode on weapon compared to Alexa?

Dude, where are you getting this stuff? Yeah, the Red One had timecode issues with drifting, but for the 5 years I had my Epic I never had an issue with it drifting over the day. I could do 12 hours shooting with no drift. As an F8 owner I also have no clue what you are talking about timecode loss over reboot. I did a test two months ago where I was rebooting the F8 and my Weapon and they both stayed jammed perfectly over multiple reboots on each device. Even the tests by Gothom sound show that the F8 has rock solid timecode when compared to other brands like SoundDevices.
