  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Tell Apple you want RED support!!!

me too :)

Folks may be interested to know that Apple owns two Reds with which they do a lot of internal production. I am told by knowledgeable insiders that they are quite "tight" with Red and I doubt that they are ignoring the importance of what Red is doing - if only because of what it means to their own production team. These things take time but you can be sure that they are aware and very probably hard at work.
Roger that ...UNdone.

Here is a great post to look at!

Doubt we had anything to do with it....

That's encouraging. I think a whitepaper from RED (however brief) would be useful at this time - for anyone not using Scratch/Da Vinci (ie - the majority) the 'correct' or 'best' solution is less and less clear at the moment. I'm not sure what SOFTWARE I have to use to get the best transcodes - let alone the workflow details.

As a video guy, I want the least fuss, most accurate way of working dictated to me - I don't want to spend time messing around with different workflows to decide which yields better results. I realise that these questions are probably being dodged by RED at the moment due to NDAs (does anyone doubt 64-bit updates are due around NAB?) - but some brief rundown in an official manner would be greatly reassuring.

Oh - and please don't think I'm the Grinch or anything, but I'd eat my mouse if the RED/Apple team was not doing more to deal with this issue than some feedback will achieve. In time, this WILL be resolved (probably when RED settle down with the updates) - I just want to know where I stand now.

If you are using build 20 footage then a pretty good place to start Grading in Color is by setting the shots to the following.

COLOR CAMERA RGB
GAMMA REC709
320ISO

This gives you an pretty accurate starting poing without clipping highlights and throwing away picture information.

When the new science is implemented it might be best to use

REDCOLOR
REDGAMMA
320ISO

as a starting point for any grading you will do.

Vegas team seems to have managed it without reminders. If I have to ask Apple to properly support Red...I'm on the wrong platform.

While I'm deeply respectful for anyone developing anything, I don't think I need to point the obvious to a party which is charging me extra for something that doesn't work as it should.

If it has come to a point where this is really necessary, we should start asking Apple for an upcoming 4.5K or 5K support in advance, as well as Cupertino version of Mercury Playback Engine.

Red is moving so fast with this stuff that a company like Apple, that caters to a much broader market, really can't be reasonably expected to track everything Red is doing, no matter how much we'd all like to see that. I've sort of resigned myself to the notion that workflows involving Apple tools are, for the moment, going to have to be in Apple-friendly or industry-standard formats like ProRes 4444 or DPX, if you want to take advantage of Red's latest stuff.

The good news is, FLUT should make it easier to turn out ProRes files that look reasonable without further processing but are more gradable than Rec. 709 or RedSpace ProRes files, which is useful for all sorts of workflows.

I actually think you will see Apple support for new color science and FLUT much sooner than expected.

It never hurts to let RED or APPLE know that this is something it's combined customers want.

It's also very much in RED's interest to have this support in APPLE and ADOBE products because those platforms represent tools a wide range of their shared customers use.

Of course. I'm happy to share ideas and suggestions with companies like RED.

I'm not interested in pulling heads out of the sand with an "innovative" company's case, though. This comment is not directed to the development team, but business management and pro-segment marginalization.

Tend to. :)

I know. It was with niceness. :)

Why don't you just ask one of the mods to delete this thread if it bothers you so much?

Honestly. It's just a way of nudging and there is nothing wrong with that. And plus. I think we're just having a bit of fun with this.

It's ok, if you don't want to ask, you don't have to.

Done

Hi,

I just submitted a feedback report to APPLE to ask them to implement the new RED Color Science.

Here is the note I pasted in to the request form:

It is my understanding that APPLE must implement the NEW REDCODE COLOR SCIENCE into the FCS suite. Please take the time to implement this support in an upcoming release of QT or with a Patch to the FSC suite.

SONY VEGAS currently supports this new Color Science.

Here is the link.

Apple responds to customer requests so please request this feature and post here when you have submitted so we can keep track of how many requests we have sent in.

Thanks,
David
