  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Tell Apple you want R3D native support for FCPX!!!

Don't forget, everyone that only reads the first post of this thread:
Apple has already confirmed R3D support coming in FCP X in a future update.

Although I think it still good if people give Apple feedback about it, showing them that this is a big audience that wants the feature. (especially with the Scarlet speaking to a bigger market potential)

Same with the other vendors. They all need to listen to the users ;)

Done, as well requested for Motion (can't hurt)

I was hoping when they said "by the end of the year" or whatever that it wouldn't be this close to the end of the year.

Damn my optimism.

I know it's only mid-September...that's late enough for me. ;)

Yep, you're optimistic. I expect nothing before October. If you want to be conservatively optimistic, shoot for the middle of the quarter; 11/15.

10.0.6 is already way overdue if you look at the FCPX release schedule thus far. The longest interim between updates was the 3 months between the original release and 10.0.1. Since then, they've been coming out pretty regularly +/- 10weeks. FCPX updates have been almost exclusively released on Tuesday, so by next Tues we'll be at 106 days since 10.0.5. So I believe the next update is imminent.

I've kept track of release dates and such on sticky on my desktop- for anyone curious...

10.0.0 - 2011.06.21
10.0.1 - 2011.09.20 91 DAYS - FEATURE RELEASE
10.0.2 - 2011.11.16 57 DAYS - MAINTENANCE UPDATE
10.0.3 - 2012.01.31 76 DAYS - FEATURE RELEASE
10.0.4 - 2012.04.10 70 DAYS - MAINTENANCE UPDATE
10.0.5 - 2012.06.11 62 DAYS - MAINTENANCE UPDATE
10.0.6 - 2012.08.xx 106 DAYS if released next Tues.

For what it's worth, I think we will see 10.0.6 this month or very early next. Sill leaving time for another bug fix (10.0.7) before the end of the year.

Very curious to see what form RED support takes. Hope to have it for something I'm shooting next month on a friend's EPIC.

Wow... Impressive.... I bet you dont forget anniversaries.

Being a fan of the Apple for the last 12 years, I now see them as a ignorant computer company that don't listen to anyone outside but themselves.

It was good while it lasted.

Good bye Apple...

Does Apple even still make computers? I thought they were a phone company! :)

Actually, I am glad Apple has not been pushed and pulled by 1000 different outside opinions who know what they want but have no idea what might work for me. If they listened to others about NLEs we would be stuck in the same editing paradigm for another decade. At least now there is someone pushing the envelope and shaking the tree; Adobe and Avid don't have the financial wherewithal (or the balls) to do that. Without someone to innovate, we get same old, same old year after year.

As I said, a sticky note I just pop open and add to whenever we get a release. Actually, I think I need a similar one for anniversaries now that you mention it....

I've been saying this since the original release last year. If you listen to editors, it's just going to be an echo chamber; and though programs would improve through refinement of existing concepts, I don't see how there could be any big leaps in NLE interface or methodology. AVID isn't going to rock the boat with it's customers, and Premier is trying to be #2, so it's gong to give users exactly what they think they want. Apple is the only one who could frankly walk away from NLE software business and not think for a second the effect it's going to have on their profitability. Some have argued that's a downside, but I think it gives them freedom to break new ground. Only Apple knows what their motivations are for continuing to be in this business, is it high level R&D for the consumer versions of the software? Is it part of an integrated plan for content creation and distribution though iTunes to circumvent traditional broadcast models? Who knows. But I find the ideas they're toying with interesting, and in some cases, VAST improvements on the status quo.

I've been editing since the late 90's, starting on film. So change in process doesn't seem to scare me.

I have finally mastered FCP X, and I have to say, for me, this is by far the best editing program I've ever used in EVERY conceivable way. Native support for Red coming this year will make it perfect FOR ME. It took quite a while of working with it to completely shake the legacy version from my head, but now that I have I am in love and could never go back. This program blows me away every time I use it. Everything is so much easier and more efficient than the clunky FCP 7. They have thought of everything in this NLE. It's an absolute work of art. Change is difficult. Most people resist it. I welcome it. To use FCP X and not have a profound respect for all of the thought and work that has gone into its creation is just plain ignorant.

I really think they are pushing back to be near to, or coincide with the new hardware release.

I expect their implimentation of R3D support will be like all others; bring it directly in, but "optimized media" is encouraged for bests performance. Folks seem to be saying that the next gen machines should be about equal to Red Rocket debayer performance, but ProRes is likely to remain the primary, working codec of choice.

If their XML handoff to Resolve could skip the reconform step, that would rock.

I believe they will roll it out with h.265 and their obviously upcoming but still unknown QFHD/4K display offering sometime next year.

+1, every time I´m struggling with other applications because of bugs (quite often) I´m falling back to my now preferred workflow: Prores edited in FCPX, XML to Resolve 9 reconnect with original R3D´s , CC and then output from Resolve. Heaven! Because it just works fluently...but I have to admit I´m transcoding with RR, and that is my base of a fast workflow.

Mark,

Let me ask you this in all seriousness. "If you were fighting a grueling war with Smsung, HTC, Google, etc. for the mobile phone, portable OS and tablet markets, would you really allocate your best developers to work on a non-linear editing application?"

I think you would have to say "No."
