  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Tattoo out this month

Tattoos are being built and tested internally right now and will be going out very soon. Jarred said the quantity was scaled back, but we don't know what that means. I was under the impression that there would only be a few of them anyway. I think the push for Stage-2 reservations up front is so RED can get hard numbers of serious buyers with funds and can begin production on many of the parts for those cameras right away. I'm thinking that once the Tattoo program concludes, the Stage-2 cameras will fly out the door pretty fast. Stage-3 will probably work in a similar way, but may take longer from a logistics perspective since they will need people to send in their RED One for the credit.
 
..or possibly there already are Tattoos out shooting.. ;~) I don't know why I fill so positive but can't help thinking that Epic-X stage 2 will be going out pretty fast after the June 1th dead line for the Deposits.. say July?

Stage 3 I believe will actually go much slower not just do to shipping logistics it self but for the additional time each sent in R1 will have to take in order to be inspected for Warranties issues and so on, plus I firmly believe that the number of Epic-X stage 3 far exceeds that of stage 2, so again here logistics will be a night mare, but as Jim said, this time they are much more prepared then they ever were with R1 original shippings.
 
I think Tattoo is either underway or starting very shortly. The fact that Stage 2 reservations began and closed recently suggests to me the same thing as Jeff; pre-production is starting up and they need to start working on hard numbers so they can begin to acquire parts for the production run.

You may be right, but I would think to the contrary. Red has learned a lot about making cameras and about releasing products. I think they plan on releasing a much more finalized product with Epic than with the R1, and this is where the Tatoo program comes into play. Maybe some are out there already, but even so, I think they will make sure these are tested really thoroughly before they start manufacturing Epics. So I would think Tatoos will be in use at least two or three months, if all goes well, so May through July, and then they may start delivering Epics in August, but... if they encounter any problem, they will have to correct them, then do some more testing, which would push back everything a couple months at least.

So we need to be patient, and good things will come to us (as they say), all in good time.

On that "irrelevant" observation, do you think it may have something to do with the fact that some of them already offered their RED ONE for sale...nah, this is surely a coincidence :hand:

you don't get any additional info about Epic tattoos till Jim press his commander's button on this.

Just only in the case if some of Epic tattoos

can be “lost” then found in a bar table or even stolen

that eventually could happened same like in

the famous iPhone 4G case

you would probably get something more about Epic Tatoo on Gizmodo.
 
You would think that if Tattoos were out in the world we would hear about it here just to let everyone know that things are going smoothly. I would like to believe they are out there but until I see a picture or Jim or Jarred post something in Recon it is still being worked on at RED.

I have a few of my own that I won't share.

I would imagine you'd want to keep most of the Tattoo development quiet- at least for the first month or so. It'd be like if we knew that a bunch of folks were running around with new iPhones. There would be a huge flood of unnecessary attention on these folks. They need to focus on solid, objective beta testing, not fulfilling our endless needs for still grabs and screen shots.
 
Agreed. Red won't advertise that the Tattoos are out and the Tattoo testers all have great respect for Jim's wishes.

Can you IMAGINE the white noise that would occur if they told everyone they were out?

"Hey Jim, I have a feature starting in mid June so this means I'll have my Epic right?"

Bleh...

It's ready when it's ready and we have all learned that there is no point trying to guess or influence when that is.
 
Also, if suddenly there's a thread saying "Tattoo Program Complete, Epics are shipping," it'll be an extra nice surprise.
