I was looking for handheld all-in-one 10x zoom lens that can compensate Nikon 18-200mm F/3.5-5.6G IF-ED AF-S VR DX

just because to get almost the same optical quality but with a real manual aperture control.

And all I've got it with Tamron AF 28-300mm AF 28-300/3,5-6,3 Aspherical LD IF that is discontinued

and today exhists in its digital electronic variant like a Tamron AF 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di II.

The lens is lightweight (plastic enclosure), minimal breathing, holds focus throughout the zoom,

has perfect color rendering, CA is pretty good reduced and is sharp enough for run-and-gun handheld documentary work.

Even you can perform some of ENG/HDTV fast zoom in-and-out effects but here with R1 you'll get at 4K or 2K.

Also don't pay to much attention to the lens sound that was made throughout the zoom in

and out because the microphone was very close and just above from the lens.

If you want to avoid that sound take microphone a bit farer from the camera itself that is anyway a bit noisy.

Does anyone know the difference between these two? Has anyone used the Canon lens with Birger or Andy mount on Red? Sanjin, what mount are you using? Can you control aperture?

Interesting. Have you shot anything outdoors you can upload?

Shooter,

it's coming up in the next days when weather here in Vienna get better.

Isn't that f/2.8 though in the picture? Looks like a cool manual lens option.

I think it's not fast as f/2.8 because is a bit slower, starts at f/3.5

Mine is with Nikon F.

Probably another lens at your list is with a sort of vibration reduction or similar and costs a bit more.

My lens is type of lens in Nikon AF/D variant with manual aperture control.

That's what I was looking for.

It is FF35 and is about 18-200 mm equivalent focal length range to APS-C/DX.

Mwhahahahahahahaha!!! Perfect! Thank you Sanjin, I may have found my new workhorse lens!

I think that still you can find a "new" (from old stock) at Adorama or similar sites.

Just ordered used (Canon version) from B&H for $249.

Let us know about your impression and test when you get it.

Hehe... good for you. I love my GPS. Just make sure you don't mount longer shotguns all the way forward, or you can compensate by aiming the shock mount a bit higher if they tilt down ever so slightly. Not an issue at all though. You'll be happy to get more coverage out of your mic investment... especially in a RUN & Gun situation such as filming the run of the bulls from the ground in 4k! Woooot!!! XP

You might also want to get an extension for it to sit higher to clear your MB if you want to use it. You don't need to go fancy on that one, just sturdy.

Finally, you might also like one of these 1.5ft XLRs to clear up some cables and with the 90 degree female to help clear your top handle.

Usually as we know you have a separate sound guy/girl with a pole, mic, recorder, mixer, timecode, etc...

A mic that can be mounted on R1 is to record a sound that can be later use for "just in case", a reference or for any

sort of "an extreme" or "an ordinary" shooting situation when you are alone without any assistant.

Yea, but if you just bought the $155 shock mount a little $18 XLR won't hurt. They will gladly cancel the order and add them together to save on shipping.

With the right XLR, one with strong directional but not so narrow pick up, and one that has long reach, you can get very decent audio and would be able to do a lot without the second man. Say you get a call saying that there was a great story two blocks away from your house, developing as we speak. But your sound guy is getting it on with his wife and won't pick up the phone... also he needs to take the sub way a train and two buses, plus walk 25 blocks to make it there. XP

Sanjin saves the day! Crowds fill the streeds, carrying him on their showlders to the capitol where he is pronounced King in a shower of flowers and $100 dollar bills... Just saying... do you really want to risk that not happening?!?!

: )

BTW, an AT4073a would do a great job and goes for $500 new, I scored one in perfect shape for $350. You probably have a good mic already. What Rode is it?

Roberto,

thanks for the AT4073a tip.

The mic is Rode NTG3.

The NTG sounds great as far as I remember, and it is supposed to be a great buy. It might be a bit too broad to be selective in a crowd if you are trying to isolate a person. However if there is all sorts of things going on around you that you need to pick up it should do a great job.

The sound isn't half bad, and could be used for broadcast. Same goes for the AT4073a but it is much more of a directional mic while remaining short in size. It also has a very long pick up range. It sounds like they would compliment each other very well. You could have both and select the right one for the environment prior to shooting, or even set both up on different channels, but that would be beyond cumbersome in a windy situation with two dead cats atop your rig. : )

Of course, as you point out, a dedicated sound guy will always be the way to go if possible. I am only saying this because with such a nice rig a little sound investment from time to time can't hurt and might make you more in demand. You are already ahead of the game with the NTG3 and headphones!

M-Audio Avid Micro-track II on RED1.

M-Audio Avid Micro-track II rocks on RED1 as a small recorder and "line in/out" two channel of audio.

So you can simultaneously record at the CF card and on R1 R3D files (2 channels), adjust recording gain and volume for headphones.

Terrific and small additional audio gadget for your R1.
