  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sweet...

Hey John, too bad I didn't get a chance to chat with you today. Looking good, walking around with your dragon buddy :)

Hey, yeah sorry I kept meaning to speak properly then other things would get in the way. Lots of interest from the lens guys on the show floor for Dragon... found out some useful info :)

Thanks guys!

So I prromised to break this down technically a bit.

Kinda the story of:

Why Gunleik went from basically desiring a Motionmount, to desiring a Dragon (with Motionmount...)

I cannot do that all in a swoosh.
So I will do that over the next few days.

And I did not want to present the piece as a "tech test", because it basically is not.

But the plan was to make up 4 worlds, and use different lights for them and see what I could do with that.
And at the IBC, I saw that going through that with DoPs was kinda informative, so I will try to do it here as well.

Now, doing this "live" is pretty fluent.

You get some questions, answer them, possibly pick up a few other shots to find better examples etc. And it all plays live on a 4k screen.

Here. It will be stills.
I might post some TIFFs when that is relevant, but I will not post R3Ds. This is a film. Not a test...

But the parameters were pretty simple

Outdoors natural light. Day and night.
Indoors tungsten
Indoors HMI
Indoors "weird lights"
And Outdoors HMI, night.

And finally I would have a peek into how it handles all this resolution and dynamics. All at once.
And of course IR handling.

Now, as stated a couple of times before.
As I went into the Dragon, there were some other aspects that ended up fascinating me more than the above.
Particularily
Fidelity
Richness
Smoothness
Highlights and lowlights handling.

I have seen tests that makes it a safe bet to say that the Dragon has a real wide DR. 16+ is probably not hype, even though I did not test for that.
Still the numbers was not what got me going.
More how they all play together to make this camera a very special shooting and post experience.

The first batch here is the images I will discuss.
I will post them "as shot", which basically means shot at RC3/RG3 ISO800/5600K

And I will discuss as I have time over the next few days.

best.

Outdoor, with 2k HMI ca 75 meters behinds the hilltop.

had planne to do this with a 4k + a butterfly, but then the 4k would not start...

That is all there is time for right now. But I will try to go through these shots and why I like what I see as time allows over the next few days.

And last but not least

A huge Thank You Sir to Peter Collister!

Best

NOW.

The most frequent question I get is;

"Is ISO 2000 similar to Epic at 800"?

And I have a bit of a vague answer to that, because I did not test for it and frankly it does not interest me too much.
ACtually I find the cameras so different in so many other ways, and the whole ISO thing is confusing.

At IBC the cameras were set up with motionmount at 2000 iso. That did not look noisy.

So I guess you could.

Also I am pretty sure I could shoot it at 6400 (pressed 3 stops from 800, 4+ stops from calibration point) if I managed NOT to underxpose that way.

I do - however - prefer keeping the camera flat at some setting and try to learn how to read the info in the LCD and interpret that, rather than messing it up and thus risking messing up the exposure.

But I am not saying THAT is the only way to work. It just works well for me.

After a little bit of experimenting, 800 felt very comfortable to me.

And thus I stayed there.

It could have been 2000. Or "whatever".

But that the camera is a lot more lightsensitive than previous RED cams is out of the question.
And that it captures a much richer signal in all areas of the exposure, that I am certain about, too.

Measured stops and sensitivity does not make that much sense to me, if I do not like the image I see.

I would have a hard time advising shooting below 320 in flat daylight or 800 in tungsten. Actually, for Tungsten/odd lights after running my images through post, I guess 1280 is maybe a good starting-point. Having that extra headroom for white-balancing is really nice.

Excellent info, really good to know.

Quick question:
So when you advise against 800 tungsten in Dragon (in MX I usually use 320), are you suggesting to use 1280 instead (and avoid going below that)?

Many thanks, Gunleik. Wonderful thread and inspiring images.

I encourage full-workflow testing prior to critical shoot... :)

But what I said was "I advice against going BELOW 800 under Tungsten", and postulated that with the lower noise floor, 1280 could be a good starting point.

this not as an advice on the HIGHEST possible useable ISO, but just considering how whitebalance work, what is a comfortable headroom for the operations.

800 is still an all time good.

2000 will probably be that for many.

going under 320 is IMHO unadvisable, as you go below calibration point and have no headroom for WB already at 320.

I have a hard time seeing any practical situation where it would be advisable to go under 320.

But I will be discussing WB "a bit" when I start looking into the separate shots.

There is some great stuff happening there in the Dragon.

I also think it is a good reference to have seen the movie, when doing this discussion... :)

Many thanks for the clarification.

Saw it, really liked it. Looking forward to your upcoming posts about "wb".
cheers

A couple of linear light images would be revealing for ext day, if you get opportunity. I know that's what impresses me :)

I will do those...

Just kinda landing at home and opening cans of worms after a bit of production tunneling, still... :)

Hopefully tonight, I can start following up.
