  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sweet...

Well, I didn't take drugs and IMO this is a short.
No need to take the linear and classical Hollywood narrative road to be consider as a filmaker.
Ask J.L Godard his thought about filmaking.
I can see a proper story in this piece, it is just a simple allegoric flash back about human relationship.

Well, I would surely not called a short by definition as it is not, this is a composition of many bits and pieces... IMO... ;)

BUT... Fact is that it presents some Stunning Cinematography... Bravo Gunleik!!

I think, it is rare in its narrative and brilliant. As Gunleik´s mind is.
Thinking outside the box and connecting the dots on as many layers as seen in this piece, is not accessible to everyone.

Which doesn´t take away from the creative and expressive merit of his short piece, which is an artist interpretation of doing some "tech tests".

I would love to see more of this, but unfortunately, right now, there ain´t no artists visible producing "it" ... ;-)

In my view, the dragon may as well help to nurture a new movement of filmic, artistic expression ... as the R1 and EPIC already did.

... in my view, the "bandwidth" of the dragon camera - as a tool - has reached a point, where it allows for many different ways to explore the human condition, which may be wicked and uncomprehensible at times ...

Gunleik´s short shows masterful lighting setups as well as hauntingly beautiful available light captures ...

.... and I had a few moments to play with the dragon myself in situations that matter to me ...

I am in awe.

peace,
Detlev

I get the Avant Garde narrative and I like art-house as much as any wet-nosed drop out from St, Martin's, that's not my point. This film has to be viewed in context; it is some of the first footage from the new Dragon sensor and will be scrutinised by many people around the world. With that in mind I find some of the decision making in regard to the cinematography and post-production somewhat perplexing.

I think the dots are easily connected. Whether one likes the film either artistically or technically is open to to question. I'd like to hear more from Gunleik about his thought process and what he was trying to achieve, particularly in terms of aesthetics.

Just short here.

Actually I really do not mind discussing the decissions.
That is open. But i am on the floor with people showing and discussing the footy at the moment. Looks like will not have all the time in the world to go into that before after IBC. What I quickly can say was that it was part of the idea to put different "worlds" with the same people against eachother, and having clear "looks" or exposure-thoughts for each of them.

Whether I managed to use that idea or not to tell a story, is - naturally - an individual concern.

Now, there was a few things i was curious about the Dragon, and I kinda got answered a few of these questions, and when I run people through the individual shots here, show where they come from and what I did with them, they kinda seem to communicate well.

That is also on a technical level.

But I understand your concerns Liam.

What I can see from what I did, is th at the Dragon is an unparallelled camera in tonality and range under most exposure conditions I have managed to abuse it in.

And... When it does not get light and/or contrast, the result is noise, as expected...

But I kinda like the noise.

The highlight rolloff is out of this world, and seeing this in a 4k cinema is different than from vimeo, as I could use more of the dynamics in a higher dynamic deliveryformat than h.264 on vimeo.

But for anyone with a 4k theatre... I have a 4k dcp. Pm me and you can have it...

Now there are things in the post workflow/grading process that was not optimum due to time constraints. But I am still pretty happy...

I do not have the TIFFs here, and also not an RRencoder, but I will ask Rob, and if I get one...

I can do it when I come home.

Also. I will walk you through each imagegroup and discuss why I like what I see, and how they were made, like I do in the booth here.

Have a hunch that could be of some use...

Best

Thanks again guys.

Heading for... Something else.
Bed or town.

Big thank you to RED!

And I will elaborate on the images when back in Norway.

When I feel lucky, I think I might get to shoot Dragon again.

Cheers

It is ;) thanks gunleik for your show and tell today!

Only bad thing about it is: it makes me want to own the dragon even more ;)

Cheers, c you tomorrow!

The first short movie shot with the dragon. This is now part of Red history.

What I really love about this, images still look cinematic, even when pushed to extremes in overexposure and post. I like the high iso grainy texture too. Movies shot on new sensor will look... well, sweet, even without tons of light.

Hey John, too bad I didn't get a chance to chat with you today. Looking good, walking around with your dragon buddy :)
